Classroom Curriculum
Dear Parent or Guardian:
Have you ever wondered what a school counselor does? It’s my job to implement a program of services that helps all students succeed in school, and in life. A large part of my role as a school counselor is preventative services. To reach each student at Mason, I teach regular classroom counselor lessons. The counselor curriculum covers three areas: academic, career, and personal/social skills. Some examples of lessons include: empathy, appreciating diversity, mental health/wellness, conflict resolution, bully awareness, personal safety, learning skills and career exploration. The objectives of the various units are:
Learning skills: students will learn strategies to be a successful and productive student
Personal or body safety: students will learn simple, straightforward strategies to protect themselves from abusive situations
Bully awareness: students will learn how to identify and deal with bully behaviors
Mental health first aid (5th and 6th grade): promoting well-being, students will learn how and when to recognize and report concerns about others to appropriate helpers
Conflict resolution: students will learn problem solving methods
Friendship skills: students will learn ways to make and maintain friendships
Career awareness: students will be exposed to a variety of career options.
Feel free to explore this document for a complete list of Mindsets and Behaviors that may be addressed by the counselor curriculum.
