With the ongoing season of the Volleyball Team’s competition hosted by the Private Schools Athletic Development Association (PRADA), we take a moment to hear from one of the team’s alumni to gain valuable insights into the current team’s performance. Jacob Asuncion, a former Lourdes School of Mandaluyong (LSM) volleyball setter who once led his team to a podium finish, shared his thoughts.
Asuncion commended the improvements he has seen in the current team, highlighting their growth and efforts to minimize mistakes. “Currently, there’s a lot to improve on,” he shared. “But just like any other team, through hard work, dedication, and consistent training, the team’s efforts will eventually pay off.” He expressed confidence that with continued focus and refinement of their skills, the team will find its rhythm and emerge as a formidable competitor. “Just a little more polishing of the rough edges, and this team will surely be one to watch out for,” he added.
Drawing from his experience as both a former Lourdes player and an active volleyball enthusiast, Asuncion identified key areas where the team can improve further. “Communication is vital,” he emphasized. “Volleyball is a team sport, and there will be moments when the ball drops between players. With proper communication and an understanding of who should take the pass, the focus can shift to executing the next play effectively.”
He also highlighted the importance of physical preparedness, particularly stamina and reflexes. “The team needs to work on moving quickly, especially in covering open spaces on the court. Quick movements can mean the difference between saving the ball or losing a point.” Asuncion further stressed the role of strength training, explaining, “Athletes need not only speed and execution but also the strength to control their movements. This helps in both offensive and defensive plays, whether it’s delivering precise attacks, executing off-speed shots, or maintaining service accuracy during crucial moments.”
Beyond physical and technical skills, Asuncion emphasized the mental aspect of the game. “Self-confidence and trust are crucial,” he said. “This is a team sport—you work together to achieve a common goal. Believing in your own abilities assures your teammates they can rely on you, whether it’s for passing, setting, or spiking.” He urged the players to build trust among themselves, stating that a strong sense of unity is the cornerstone of any successful team. “When you trust each other, you create a shared belief in what the team can achieve, not just for yourselves but for your coach, your school, and your community.”
With a balanced focus on communication, physical training, and team cohesion, Jacob Asuncion believes the current Lourdes volleyball team is on the right track to make a lasting impact in the PRADA league.
We asked Jacob Asuncion to give words of encouragement to future volleyball players of the LSM Griffins; “Build yourself and heal yourself through playing” He replied.
“Growing up I never thought of finding a sport that I would actually love, till I met my seniors who also did the same and introduced me to volleyball. Ever since then, they have become a vital aspect to me pursuing this sport and pursuing being an athlete.” Asuncion shared. “I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it. But because I chose to continue, Volleyball has become a big part in both healing me and building me. I was able to meet new people, new coaches, and I was able to understand my capabilities not just as an athlete but also as a human being.” He added.
"You won't lose anything in attempting to play volleyball, you’ll only gain more in the long run and I promise you that you’ll understand this when you your itching to play and see your teammates, you’ll understand this when you want to try something new, you’ll understand this each time you hold the ball and represent your name and your school.” Jacob Asuncion firmly believes that aspiring volleyball players should try the sport.
Through everything that he has experienced as a former LSM volleyball player, we asked Jacob about how volleyball changed his life and how important volleyball is for him.
“Volleyball has given me an opportunity to meet great people, some even have taught and shared their knowledge on the sport.“ Jacob stated. This clearly shows that the volleyball team is very welcoming. Teamwork and friendships will surely form in this environment. “Volleyball became a comfort to me, it felt like each time I was with my team I was home, that I am always in good hands, that I am safe, and that I am always welcome in their presence and to be there each time felt like I always cherished each moment together, like I had more brothers that I originally have.” Jacob Asuncion added.
“This sport has given me more than I ever imagined my life would be and I hope to continuously play to the best of my abilities and as long as time continues to do so for me.” Jacob shared.
Jacob Asuncion, a former Griffins Spiker, is a living testament that anything that you want to achieve is possible. With the support of teammates, coaches, friends, family, and God’s guidance, anything is possible. As Jacob Asuncion said, “Build yourself and heal yourself through playing.” Never give up on your dreams and goals in life, because you will never know what will happen if you don't try.
