Have you ever heard of the name “X-Men?” If you have, who is your favorite character? Mine is Storm because I love a strong woman who can fend for herself. But it is also because storms hit close to home for us Filipinos… literally.
‘Typhoon Marce’ is one of the many storms that have come to ravage our lands. Being so familiar with the natural calamity, we should know how to deal with it to minimize its effects and damage. But does that happen to be the case?
Recurring President of the Philippines, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., takes the lead in battling the violent winds. By directing the government agencies into action, Marcos seizes the typhoon by the throat to defend his people from peril.
“You all know the drill.” This is a reminder that this is not our first time encountering such dangers. Do as you have learned from memory and experience. This shall be the battle all Filipinos get to participate in countless times.
A storm has many traits we Filipinos need to consider. Like a personality with many complexities. The wind, the thunder, the flood. There are many things needed to be prepared before, during, and after a storm.
With every attack of the storm comes a counter from our side. A storm too strong to face means retreat through evacuation. For every flood comes a drainage system ready to unclog the debris, along with the occasional swimmers who see the flood as one big pool. It just means every strike calls for a parry.
This is our home so we stand our ground. Neither disaster nor aliens should take it away from us. That is who we are; brave-blooded warriors with the spirit of eagles. Fearless as we are, our priority is still the survival of our fellow brothers and sisters.
That is why I love Storm from X-Men. She is the image of irony for us Filipinos. Strong and spirited alike but named after our biggest enemy. Typhoon Marce better prepare itself because the real storm has yet to come.
