Uniting in Song

Challenge Bias & Bullying, Celebrate Diversity, Promote Respect for Others' Differences

Shawnee High School's Uniting in Song Playlist

This year we asked every Shawnee High School student to identify songs that represent the core values of a Shawnee High School student in an assignment through all Health/PE classes called Uniting in Song. As a No Place for Hate School, we expect Shawnee HS students to be UPSTANDERS who: Challenge Bias and Bullying, Celebrate Diversity, & Promote Respect for Others' Differences. We are proud to reveal the songs that made our Playlist! Each morning during the week of May 24 - 28, 2021 we will be playing one of the songs during our morning music.

Remember, if you or someone you know is the victim of Harassment Intimidation or Bullying, SPEAK UP. We cannot help if we do not know about it. Every student in our building deserves to be treated with dignity. If you see something, please say something. Please stop down and talk to an administrator or your counselor to report what you have experienced or witnessed.

Song #1: Where is the Love? (Black Eyed Peas)

Here is why a few of our students chose this song:

"This song celebrates diversity by saying that discrimination only generates hate and talking about how different the world would be if people practiced what they preached."

"This song celebrates diversity and promotes respect for others' differences by showing the effects of spreading love and accepting people for who they are. Everyone is different and that is something that should be celebrated and not hated."

Song #2: Roar

(Katie Perry)

Here is why one student chose this song:

"This has encouraged me to be strong when others are hard on me. This also challenged my thinking where if I witness bullying, I need to use my voice or 'roar' to stand up for the person who needs it."

Song #3: Beautiful (Christina Aguilera)

Here is why a few of our students chose this song.

"The song tells you that you're beautiful for who you are as a human being in the world."

"This song celebrates diversity as it holds the message that everyone is beautiful no matter what others say or think, that people are great and unique in their own ways and that nothing should deter them from thinking otherwise."

Song #4: Scars to Your Beautiful (Alessia Cara)

Here is why a few of our students chose this song.

It shows that it doesn't matter what you look like everyone is beautiful and deserves to be treated equally.”

“The song celebrates the unique & diverse nature of each individual, and it encourages us to be confident in our own skin”

“I think this song promotes respect for others differences since it talks about how people are affected by societies standards. But the song says even though you may not fit those standards each person should learn to be confident in who they are and that their differences should be celebrated.”

Song #5: Born This Way (Lady Gaga)

Here is why a few of our students chose this song.

"Born This Way" emphasizes that everyone was made to be different and no two people are the same, nor are they supposed to be. Though it fits all of the above categories, Gaga is ultimately promoting respect and acknowledgment of others' differences and is saying that its not only okay to be who you really are, but that it is amazing. Essentially Gaga is providing awareness to all communities that being different, being YOU, is the best version of yourself you can be if you allow yourself to become it."

"This song celebrates diversity because its so empowering and shows its good to be different and it celebrates that and it talks about you don't have to be sorry for how you are. and it promotes respect for others because it talks about not judging people or yourself."

A runner up to our Top 5 playlist and a song that represents these core values is "One Love" by Bob Marley. The following video put together in support of UNICEF summarizes our hope in cultivating a culture of dignity and belonging.
