TV BROADCASTING I

Course Syllabus

In this course, students will get an introduction to television and film production. Students will get hands on experience in creating news productions and short video productions. Concepts from pre-production through post-production will be taught. Students will learn about script writing and storyboarding, as well as how to use cameras and production equipment and edit productions.

In addition to the course, students will be given the opportunity to work with Chief TV, the Cherokee network station, and LDTV, the Lenape District network station. Chief TV is a club that students can participate in, or collaborate with, to film events such as award and other ceremonies held at Cherokee. LDTV films many productions for the district, but we work closely with them to film select varsity sports each season. While LDTV films at four schools, we suggest students choose events held at Cherokee.

Curriculum

Grading

Projects & Quizzes -60% (MP1 & MP4) or 50% (MP2 & MP3)

Most projects will be done in the group setting. Students within the group will earn the same grade for the project, but students will complete self and peer evaluations following each project, which will impact their class participation grade. Test and quizzes will also be graded within this category.

Assignments - 40%

This portion of the grade will be made up of classwork and homework assignments. Homework assignments are not often given, but the few are graded assignments. Classwork will be made up of assignments given throughout lessons that prepare students for their large group project.

Progress Assessment - 10% (MP2 & MP3)

Students will be given two progress assessments during the year. These progress assessments are used to evaluate students knowledge learned through out the course. During the marking periods that progress assessments are given, Projects & Quizzes will be worth 30% of their grade and the Progress Assessments will be worth 10%.

Extra Credit

Students can earn extra credit by working production crew for an event. To earn the credit, students must sign up in advance for the event, arrive at crew call, effectively work their crew position, and stay through the completion of the event, which includes the breaking down of the equipment. Students can also create broadcast quality content for Chief TV and LDTV.
