Publications Meets Mr. Melton

Mrs. Boss was given the opportunity to teach a Publications I class this school year. As excited as she was, she was equally as nervous. "Building the yearbook doesn't come until we are a couple of months in to the school year so what are we going to do at the beginning?" That's when the light turned on - she was going to have her class create a school newspaper/blog filled with content from the students themselves.

The students in the Publications class seemed to be excited about the idea she had. Free reign to write about anything that is appropriate for school? The ideas started flying about article topics - Polls about their favorite teachers, features about students with special talents, Rankings of their favorite movies. Mrs. Boss said seeing her students excited about the idea encouraged her to work really hard to bring this entire thing to life.

"The students are working on their first article right now," Mrs. Boss said. She came up with the idea for them to each come up with a question for none other than the new leader of the school, Mr. Melton. "I approached him and asked if he would be willing to sit down amongst my Publications students and let them fire off questions. He was more than willing. The class was pumped!"

Students spent a class period coming up with a list of questions then Mrs. Boss narrowed them down so each student would be asking one question. On Tuesday, Mr. Melton arrived to class - and only 5 minutes late! The students got a real kick out of that one...The principal was late to his own interview! He sat in front of the students and it began.

"I really am so proud of them," Mrs. Boss said, "it's not easy to be a student, much less to stand up in front of the principal and ask him a question." She said they were all, including herself, a little nervous about how it would go but they exceeded her expectations.

Now they will begin assembling the article - stay tuned!
