The Plains Indians lived between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. They lived on flat grassy plains. There were few trees but lots of wildlife. Where the Plains Indians lived they had cold winters and hot summers.
Do you know what the Plains Indians ate? They ate many foods. Men fished in rivers and streams. Men hunted buffalo, deer, antelope, and jack rabbit. Women were gatherers. They gathered seeds, pumpkin seeds, wild turnips, berries, squash, corn, and nuts. Their favorite food was wild turnips.
Do you know where the Plains Indians lived? They lived in tepees. Poles leaned together to make a tent surrounded by buffalo skin. The tepees had holes in the top so smoke from the fire can get out. They took down their tepees to follow the buffalo. There were few tribes that didn't move around.
The Plains Indians made their clothings from animal hides. Woman and girls wore animal skin dresses. Men and boys wore animal skin leggings and loincloths. They also wore moccasins and decorated them with beads.
