Challenge & Rigor
How can I increase the complexity of the task rather than the quantity of work?
When students have already demonstrated proficiency, the goal is not to give them more work, it's to provide more intellectually demanding work. Increasing task complexity encourages deeper thinking, creativity, and transfer of learning while maintaining engagement.
Use these research-based strategies for increasing complexity instead of quantity: Increasing Cognitive Complexity
After discussing the research-based strategies, select an activity that can be used as enrichment and ask the following questions to reflect on the activity:
Does the enrichment require students to analyze, evaluate, create, or solve authentic problems?
Are we providing opportunities for critical thinking and creativity?
How can we move students from surface-level understanding to deeper application?
