Welcome to Seventh Grade! Our goal is to help you understand the mathematics your child will be learning this year. This letter will help you better understand the mathematics expectations for 7th Grade and the supporting resources to provide ideas of how to work with your child at home throughout the school year.
In 7th Grade, there are six mathematics content standards for students to learn. Your child will learn to demonstrate skills and strategies needed to succeed in mathematics, including critical thinking, reasoning, effective collaboration and expression. Your child will also be encouraged to seek help and to apply feedback to the task at hand while setting and monitoring individual goals. Learning to solve problems successfully will be a goal for students all year.

The fundamental purpose of seventh grade mathematics is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the previous grades. The critical areas, organized into units, deepen and extend understanding of linear relationships, in part by contrasting them with exponential phenomena, and in part by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. Seventh grade standards use algebra to deepen and extend understanding of geometric knowledge from prior grades. The final unit in the course ties together the algebraic and geometric ideas studied. The Standards for Mathematical Practice apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.
Develop a deeper understanding of numbers expressing different representations of rational numbers such as fractions, decimals, and percents.
They will continue to work with rational numbers in all operations.
Learn to simplify expressions by combining like terms and apply that learning to solve two-step and multi-step equations and inequalities using the properties of equality.
Learn to write and solve equations involving angle relationships to determine the measure of a missing angle. Seventh graders will also write and solve equations to find the area, volume, and surface area of solid figures.
Learn how to apply the statistical aspect of mathematics to the measure of center, variability and population making inferences.
Discover the concept of probability with simple and compound probabilities.
