KS3 Curriculum


Year 7

Pupils undergo a variety of baseline activities and an introductory module of various to build up their confidence in ICT and build up basic skills required for the rest of the course. They then follow a series of studies to help them; analyse information, present information, modelling information, data handling and control technology.

Year 8

Pupils build upon their understanding and study a variety of topics which include how ICT is used in business , Micro:bits ,3D design and Python . The assignments include Building a Web site, Information: Reliability, Validity and Bias, Data: Use and Misuse, Public Information Systems and Systems: Integrating Applications, and control.

Year 9

Pupils continue to build upon their understanding and study a variety of topics which include Spreadsheet Modelling , Digital Imaging, Website HTML Design and Computer Networks. Regular end of topic assessment helps them identify if the subject will be suitable for them in their option groups.

Course Information

UNIT 1: Developing Web Products Unit Reference: DA201

Overview of content

In this unit, students will demonstrate their ability to design, build and test a web product in a practical computer-based examination. Students will investigate aspects of successful design, including content, structure, navigation, screen and interactivity. Students will develop their web authoring software skills. They will optimise images, embed sound, video and animation files. Students will learn to identify essential elements of html code and make alterations.

Overview of assessment

This unit is assessed through a 2 hour 30 minute practical examination and marked by Edexcel. This represents 25% of the final mark.

UNIT 3: Artwork and Imaging Unit Reference: DA203

Overview of content

This is a practical unit. Students broaden and enhance their ICT skills and capability. They work with a range of digital tools and techniques to produce effective ICT solutions in a range of contexts. They learn to reflect critically on their own and others’ use of ICT and to adopt safe, secure and responsible practice.

Overview of assessment

The unit is internally assessed under controlled conditions.

Students must complete a controlled assessment task provided by Edexcel.

Marking of the task is carried out by teachers and moderated by Edexcel against set assessment criteria. This represents 75% of the final mark

Years 11

Pupils can choose the TLM Level 2 Certificate for IT User Skills in Open Systems & Enterprise (QCF) course, which is coursework and one exam. It allows students to gain a deeper understanding of how computers work, as well as developing their practical skills in using ICT. For full details, see the TLM website.
