The Day continues to be an excellent resource to use across all library lessons. It is arguably even more powerful than ever at the moment in providing balanced and reliable content on all major news stories across the world.
As ever, there has been a great selection of articles to choose from in April and May, on diverse topics such as:
Should footballers be treated as heroes when compared to other members of society?
Is football now all about money and in a battle for its soul?
Why are there more older footballers like Messi and Ronaldo playing in this World Cup?
Is Messi the greatest footballer of all time?
Was England’s 3-2 win over Mexico one of their best ever results?
Will the proposed Under 16 ban on social media work?
Why have there been so many changes of prime minister in recent years?
Should we have the right to break unfair rules?
Well done to many of the Year 7, 8 and 9 classes, who are improving their oracy and debating skills all the time.
Here is a summary of some of the well-considered views expressed:
Ibrahim, Warris and (8.3) on whether Ronaldo and Messi should retire.
“Cristiano Ronaldo should definitely retire as soon as he reaches his career goal of scoring 1000 goals. He is not as good now for Portugal as he was in previous World Cups.”
“Lionel Messi should also retire soon as he’s had so many achievements including winning the World Cup for Argentina, and he’s left a prestigious legacy which he shouldn’t spoil”
Ashae and Dominic (9.1) on whether social media should be banned for Under 16s
“I think the ban is completely unneccesary because social media does more good for teenagers than bad. They should get the companies to remove the content that causes problems”
“If they have to introduce a ban it would make more sense if it’s for Under 13s. I also think that teenagers will find ways arounds the ban, like using VPNs as they have in Australia.”
Edbert and Rehaan (9.3) - On whether we should have the right to break unfair rules
“This depends on what the rule is, but people should have the right to protest peacefully. I don’t think that the Taliban have the right to ban women from playing cricket or other sports in Afghanistan. Women should have equal rights to men in every country”
(8,2) – On whether footballers should be considered as heroes?
“Footballers like Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane are entertainers and deserve to get paid high salaries, but they are not heroes like people in some other dangerous jobs like the fire service and the army. People like doctors and nurses who help to save lives are the real heroes”
“The England football team will definitely be heroes if they win the World Cup.”
