Language Arts & Social Studies
Welcome to our class website! Check this space to see what's going on this week in language arts and social studies. Homework can be found on the calendar to the right. Absent students should check Google Classroom and StudySync for missed work.
We are continuing our Language Arts unit on Suspense this week, while also working on writing complex sentences and expanding vocabulary through challenging words we meet in our texts. Next week students will begin writing their own tales of suspense, using the knowledge they've gained thus far. In Social Studies, we are wrapping up our study of the colonies, with a Chapter 2 test next week (currently scheduled for Tuesday, but check the calendar and your child's planner for any date changes).
This week we are diving deep into our first language arts unit: Suspense! We'll be reading Edgar Allan Poe's classic "The Tell-Tale Heart," practicing collaborative conversations about the elements of the story, and working on crafting evidence-based responses to questions about the text. Students will also continue to stretch their writing skills and stamina in our daily writing exercises.
In Social Studies, we have started learning why European powers were motivated to explore the new world and establish colonies in the period from the 1400s to the 1600s. This week we will begin discussing the British colonies in North America and the distinguishing features of the New England, middle and southern colonies. Students will take an open-note quiz on Thursday, covering European exploration and colonization and the southern colonies. Be sure to check the homework calendar to the right.
