This school year welcomes the addition of a group of new faculty members and teachers to our school’s community. These new staff members bring new experiences and perspectives that will enrich our school’s culture. Here is a closer look at who they are, their thoughts on LHS, and how they are adjusting to LHS.
The new teachers are Mrs. Correia, Mr. Florence, Mr. Lemke, Mrs. Mahoney, Mrs. Marchesani, and Mrs. Martinez.
Mrs. Correia and Mrs. Mahoney are both additions to our World Languages Department. Mr Lemke is an addition to the Student Support Center and Mrs. Marchesani works as a school adjustment counselor. Mr Florence is an addition to our english department and Mrs. Martinez is an addition to our math department.
Mr. Lemke
When asked about his experience at LHS, Mr. Lemke shared, “My experience has been great. Everyone at LHS has been very welcoming and helpful”. Having worked in two previous school districts, he finds LHS to be a welcoming change, specifically noting, “The staff and students have been great.” Although he has not encountered many major challenges yet, he admits that familiarizing himself with the new schedule’s rotation has been an adjustment as it is new
to him.
Mr. Lemke is impressed with the respectfulness and hardworking characteristics of the student body at LHS and could not think of anything he would change.
Mrs. Marchesani
Mrs. Marchesani, another addition to LHS, describes her experience so far as “great,” also noting that she has worked with students from LHS in the past. Having enjoyed her previous “part time role,” she sought to fulfill a full time position at LHS.
Mrs. Marchesani’s background in mental health and wellness brings a unique new perspective to LHS. Instead of changes she would like to see, she is focused on what she can contribute to the school: “I believe I can contribute mental health and wellness expertise, a sense of calm and stability, and opportunities for learning and practicing self-advocacy.” She envisions the making of a space where students can have their voices heard and respected. Mrs. Marchesani also recognizes the power of laughter as a part of well-being. “Fun and laughter are two of the best coping strategies”. She emphasizes that a lighthearted environment can make school a more positive experience for everyone.
The LHS faculty and staff have been “an incredibly supportive group with a strong sense of teamwork and a real value for each other’s professional experience.”
Mr. Florence
Mr. Florence, who’s worked in five different school districts, describes his experience at LHS as “fantastic”. Although he has not faced any major challenges he is sure there are “some down the line to come” and explains that “learning to teach new classes can be challenging” but he finds it “fun” as he can “read new books and try new things.” Mr. Florence also finds it interesting how involved students are in clubs and activities making the “place seem more like a community.” Additionally, Mr. Florence notes that the students “are motivated not only to do well but they are motivated intrinsically and want to do well.” The students are engaged with the content and excited to learn in his experience. The LHS faculty and staff have been “unbelievably helpful and welcoming” helping him get set up with his new position overall contributing to his positive experience at LHS.
As they settle into their new roles, each of these new faculty members is eager to contribute to the LHS community. Their enthusiasm, fresh ideas, and commitment to the students make them valuable additions to our school. Be sure to say hello and welcome them to Longmeadow High School!
Note: The Jett Jotter reached out to Mrs. Mahoney and Mrs. Correia but did not get a response.
