Class overview

The Wellness curriculum provides students with the opportunity to develop their physical, mental, and social well-being throughout their four years of high school. Learning experiences are designed to help promote positive attitudes and behaviors that may enhance the quality of life and to maximize personal potential. Health activities will provide students with the knowledge to think critically, communicate effectively, make good decisions and act responsibly. Physical activities, both recreational and competitive, will provide students with a base of knowledge needed to help maintain their personal fitness throughout their lifetime. Longmeadow High School promotes physical activity as part of a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle.

Wellness Expectations and Guide to Success

Wellness Department Requirements

To be successful in The Wellness Department you must follow the 4 P’s

  • Be PRESENT

  • Be PREPARED

  • PARTICIPATE

  • Be POSITIVE

PRESENT:

  • Students are expected to be in class ON TIME. Any student who is late to class needs to come with a pass or be prepared to fill out a Tardy Slip.

  • Students must make up ALL classes that are missed.

    • It is the student’s responsibility to find out if they have missed any classes, and keep track of how many absences they have (see Power School).

    • If you miss a class for ANY reason (including temporary medical reasons, college visits, field trips, etc.) see your Wellness teacher A.S.A.P. to schedule make-ups.

    • Students may make up classes during their ICE blocks or by appointment with their teacher.

    • Students have two weeks to make up excused absences.

    • Long-term Medicals will be done in conjunction with the School Counselor

PREPARED:

  • Being prepared means a student has changed their clothes for class and is wearing proper attire. Students will be given time to change at the beginning of class and again at the end of class.

  • All students are given a school-issued combination lock and will be assigned a locker to secure their personal items such as clothing, jewelry, cell phones, etc. If a lock is not returned at the end of the year, the student is responsible to cover the cost of replacement.

  • No cell phones unless the teacher specifically asks you to bring it to class for a specific lesson.

  • Unprepared- If a teacher determines that a student is not appropriately prepared to participate in class, that student has one week to make up the class for partial credit, and will serve a detention that day. If lack of preparation becomes a pattern, the student will be required to meet with the Wellness Department Chair, Mrs. Roy. Any student who is not prepared with the proper attire for class WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THEIR SPORTS PRACTICE OR GAME THAT DAY.

PROPER ATTIRE = A change of clothes such as t-shirts/sweatshirts, shorts/sweatpants, sneakers and socks. Sneakers must have laces and be tied securely to avoid injuries. No jewelry!

NOTE: If a student leaves class with the same clothes they wore during class they will receive a zero for the day.

Any student who is not prepared with the proper attire for class WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THEIR SPORTS PRACTICE OR GAME THAT DAY.

PARTICIPATE:

  • Students are required to participate in all class activities and put forth their best effort.

  • A student must leave a Doctor’s note with the school nurse if they have a medical excuse from participation.

Any student who is not well enough to participate in their Wellness class on any given day WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THEIR SPORTS PRACTICE OR GAME THAT DAY.

POSITIVE:

Come to class with a positive attitude! Wellness class is a time where you have the opportunity to move your body, interact with other students, learn something new, and have fun! All students should be treated with respect regardless of any similarities or differences. Always be considerate of how your body language, comments, actions, etc. might affect others in the class.

GRADING:

  • A daily grade will be given based on the following rubric:

5 points- student works to their full potential, is prepared, on time, and participates

100% of the time, teacher does not have to remind student to work.

4 points- student is prepared, on time, participates most of the time, teacher does not

have to remind student to work.

3 points- student is prepared, participates some of the time. The teacher may have to

remind them to stay on task.

2 points-student is changed, does not stay on task, minimal effort.

1 point-student demonstrates poor effort, or is a discipline problem.

0 points- student demonstrates no effort, may be a discipline problem in class, is

absent/unprepared and does not make up the class.

  • Final Grades for each term are calculated by an average from all daily participation grades, tests/quizzes, and any project or homework that was assigned.
