Course Description: The 5th grade social studies course focuses on American history and civics from the late 1600s to the early 1900s. Students will study events that shaped our nation. The development of the United States will be analyzed through understanding the culture, geography, economy, and government of specific time periods and regions. Through a diverse approach to instruction, this course will incorporate ELA skills, critical thinking, and use of technology.
Classroom Expectations: Students are expected to follow the classroom rules at all times. This year we will focus on maturity, independence, responsibility, and organization. Fifth grade is a transitional year. Students will graduate prepared for middle school.
Course Materials: Each day students should bring the following items to class...
Fully charged Chromebook (charger stays at home)
Spiral notebook (3-subject, label cover with student name & Social Studies)
Earbuds or headphones
Pencil bag: pencils, erasable pens, highlighters, glue stick, & colored pencils
Silent reading book
Homework: It is the student’s responsibility to record the assigned homework and upcoming due dates in their agenda book. There will always be at least a 5 day notification of all tests and quizzes. Study guides are provided for all assessments. Remember to check Google Classroom for these announcements!
Every night students need to charge their Chromebook. Students should come to school with 100% charge every day. If a student forgets their Chromebook at home an alternate assignment may be given and/or homework will be assigned to complete what was missed.
All absent work will be posted in Google Classroom. Please remember to check each day you are out. Copies of missed notes will be provided when the student returns to school.

Mrs. Burd's Bio: I grew up in Long Hill Township and am a proud alumna of the LHT School District! Over the past 18 years I have taught both fourth and fifth grades at Millington School. I am a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University with a Master of Arts in Teaching. In addition, I completed two Post-Master's programs at Montclair State University in the fields of Educational Assessment and Supervision. I hold a K-5 Elementary Education Teaching Certification, a Middle School Social Studies Certification for grades 5-8, and a NJ Supervisor Certification.
