Good Afternoon Pirates:
As we gear up for the start of the 2020-2021 school year, the health and safety of students, staff, and families continues to weigh heavily on our decisions to open our campuses for face to face instruction. On Monday, area superintendents met with city officials to discuss the growing concern that COVID is having in our community. The meeting resulted in the great likelihood of a health order being initiated by the City Council and Nueces County as early as next week.
It is our understanding that language in the health order will not allow schools the ability to offer on campus, face to face instruction until after Labor Day. We can, however, move to start school with remote learning. For London, this means we can keep the same school calendar, as revised on July 1, 2020, and begin student instruction via remote means on Wednesday, July 29, 2020. Once we know that we can return to school, we will provide parents the option of continuing the remote learning or the choice to be back on campus for face to face instruction.
Please be aware that remote learning will have different expectations and guidelines than what students experienced last spring. LISD has purchased a Texas based online curriculum for grades 3-12 that offers a rigorous academic program. Students will experience a variety of instructional content that is academically challenging and visually engaging to stimulate the educational mind and encourage academic discovery. The curriculum team is working on learning options and resources for PK-2 that are just as rigorous.
We have numerous logistics to address in order to be ready to start remote learning on July 29, 2020. Our administrative team is extremely busy, working tirelessly to focus on all of the normal details associated with back to school along with the new challenge of making learning happen one hundred percent remotely under revised state guidelines. As more information becomes available, we will contact you with details.
We thank you for your continued patience and support. Stay safe and healthy.

Good afternoon London Pirates:
As you anticipate the start of the new year, please be aware that school districts received guidance from the Commissioner of Education late Tuesday afternoon. For now, we are on track with the instructional calendar approved by the Board of Trustees on July 1, 2020. This means that the first day of school for students is Wednesday, July 29, 2020.
The two parent options, daily on-campus learning or at-home remote learning, are being refined to meet the needs of LISD students. During the week of July 20, 2020, parents will receive information on how to make their selection for their child(ren). Parents who choose remote instruction for their students will be asked to commit to at-home learning for a full six weeks grading period.
There are still many details to be worked out for things such as recording attendance and verifying enrollment, providing opportunities for extracurricular participation, remote educational opportunities, specialized courses that might require hands-on experience, transporting students to and from school, the use of personal protective equipment and masks, and establishing reliable communication with parents and district stakeholders. Schools will also be required to follow any existing or forthcoming executive orders issued by the Governor.
Campuses are developing specific return to school plans and a district level plan is in progress. The target date for completion of the plans is Monday, July 20, 2020.
Our overall goal in London ISD continues to be prioritizing the health and safety of our students and staff while ensuring that students receive quality instruction. Thank you for your continued patience and support as we work together to safely and successfully start the 2020-2021 school year.

Good Afternoon London Pirates:
We hope you were able to watch last night’s Board of Trustee meeting, where changes to the 2020-2021 academic calendar were discussed and approved. Based on recent events, the approval to delay the school start date is what is best for students, staff and families. The Board of Trustees and I understand the impact that any calendar changes have and want to assure you that the health and safety of all Pirates continues to be at the forefront of our decision making efforts.
Students will begin classes on Wednesday, July 29, 2020. A revised calendar has been posted on the London ISD website at the following link.
More information will be made available in the coming days regarding the choice of in person instruction or remote learning. We continue to wait on the Commissioner of Education for further direction. Please regularly visit the District website for updates and information.
In the meantime, we hope everyone has a safe and healthy holiday weekend.
