Introduction

Game Design 1- 8141 Intermediate Games and Simulation (Concentrator) This course introduces students to the history, art, and science of game development. Students will be introduced to game and simulation analysis, design, documentation, and development tools. Students will develop games or simulations. Students will learn skills such as storyboarding, plot, flow, and using functions, implement standard game/simulation strategy and rules of play and integrate mixed media.

Game Design 2- 8142 Advanced Games and Simulation (Capstone) This course allows students to learn and display mastery of advanced game design/simulation skills in projects they design individually and in teams. Advanced skills include applying programming skills for rendering games or simulation projects, program control, memory management, strategies, and implementation.

Pathway objectives/key learning outcomes

1.0 Identify and describe critical game and simulation studies, the resulting societal impact, and the management, industry, and career requirements.

2.0 Demonstrate an understanding of game and simulation analysis, design, standard documentation, and development tools.

3.0 Create a working game or simulation individually or as part of a team.

4.0 Identify, describe, and implement standard game/simulation strategy and rules of play.

5.0 Integrate music, sound, art, and animation as it applies to the environmental design of the game/ simulation.

6.0 Explain the role and principles of event modeling and interface design and apply those principles in a game/simulation design and project.

7.0 Acquire and apply appropriate programming skills for rendering a single player or multiuser game or simulation project, including program control, conditional branching, memory management, scorekeeping, timed event strategies, and implementation issues.

8.0 Acquire and apply appropriate artificial intelligence (AI) techniques used by the game development industry.

Instructional Structure of the Class

Lecture, videos, and hands on instructions will occur daily with guided and independent practice to be completed in class. Students will be expected to work with peers as needed, and seek assistance as needed. This course strongly emphasizes the ability to find and use resources to solve problems independently.

Progress Monitoring/GRADES

Students will complete assignments and tutorials in class. Proof of understanding is observed through the successful completion of tasks/projects/assignments. Projects are graded on the basis of effort, tenacity, completion and quality. Late assignments are accepted up to the end of each semester without grade penalty. Badges are earned through successful completion of tasks within deadlines.

Absent/Make-up/Replacement

Homework is rarely assigned. Homework will typically include research of class topics through game play, discussions, and observations to use in class assignments.

Support/Intervention

Classroom is open before school and at lunch for students who fall behind or wish to move ahead.

Classroom Norms

1.     Professionalism (includes ethics, responsibility, integrity, and avoiding plagiarism)

2. Safety (personal and materials/equipment)

3.     Respect (for others, property, work, and workstation)

4. Seek Help (Use all resources first)
