PROJECT-BASED LEARNING (PBL)

What are projects like??  A project at Central Coast New Tech High using Project-Based Learning (PBL) is NOT like a traditional project, which is typically the "dessert" of a traditional unit. Using PBL... The project DRIVES the learning from beginning to end!

21st CENTURY SKILLS

As a school in the New Tech Network, Central Coast New Tech High employs the following five School Wide Learning Outcomes (SWLO), which are assessed in all courses as a percentage of the total course grade. These SWLO are also closely aligned with the so-called 21st Century Skills. These are skills that future-thinking companies like Google believe are essential for success in our 21st century world.

ACADEMIC RIGOR

CCNTH by the numbers... Central Coast New Tech High students are engaged in their learning AND rock their academics!  The last round of state testing was in 2019 before any Covid-19 restrictions and our students outperformed ALL of the schools in our county for English Language Arts (ELA) and ALL of the schools in Lucia Mar for Math!!  And... They are getting those A-G requirements and lots of college credits, which qualifies them for moving on to a 4-year university AND makes them competitive too!

COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS

CCNTH by the numbers... AgainIs that a 100% graduation rate?!? That's right! CCNTH students are taking ownership of their learning and they feel prepared for what's next - College & Career!  Not only are all CCNTH classes rigorous and COLLEGE PREP, Central Coast New Tech High also has an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program for all grades that provides additional support to students who will be the first in their families to attend college and there are also five amazing Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways for students to choose from!

CARING & CONNECTED STAFF

The entire CCNTH staff loves the opportunity to challenge students and encourage them to reach their highest potential. But that goal is a distant second to our desire as a staff to provide care and connection to every student who walks onto our campus. One way that we facilitate this is through our school's incredible Advisory program. This is NOT your typical advisory or homeroom. Rather, the Advisory program at CCNTH develops what we fondly call "our family within the pack". * Because we're Direwolves, of course!

The primary goals of our Advisory program are to provide SUPPORT, CONNECTION, and GROWTH over a student's time at CCNTH. Students are assigned an advisor their first year and then they see that same advisor every week until they graduate. Advisory classes are also a mix of all grade levels, so students have a chance to provide support and grow connections with each other as well. Finally, the Advisory program provides students with even more opportunities for growth through Passion Projects, which are short extra curricular classes and workshops offered throughout the year, and then the program culminates with support for developing a Professional Portfolio and delivering a successful Senior Defense of their learning throughout high school, which is required for graduation from CCNTH.

FAMILY-LIKE SCHOOL CULTURE

It can be a difficult choice to follow a different path and we've heard from many students that their parents "made them go to New Tech" . However, we almost always hear from those same students that they were so glad they did. Our students have many reasons for staying at CCNTH and you can hear some of their stories in the video below made by Sophia Martino, Class of 2022. There is one reason that stands out though and we hear it over and over again... Students LOVE the school culture at CCNTH. Again, the numbers speak for themselves. Even during the height of Covid-19 restrictions, our students felt connected to their CCNTH family and engaged in a positive learning environment through Project-Based Learning (PBL).
