CSI vs. forensic labs, crime scene evidence, search patterns, packaging evidence, stages of decomposition

2. Fingerprints

Classification of fingerprints, fingerprint identification systems, preservation of developed prints, methods of detecting fingerprints

3. Forensic Serology

Nature of blood, characteristics and analysis of blood stains, blood testing and typing

4. Forensic Toxicology and Drugs

The role of a Forensic Toxicologist, types of drugs, drug analysis

5. Trace Evidence: Hair and Fibers

Forensic examination of hair, forensic examination of fibers

6. Forensic Impressions

Casting impressions collected as evidence

7. Final Project

Your final project will use the units we have learned throughout the course to compile a background story, a crime scene and evidence that you will share with the class.


Lab Requirements

  1. All labs are relevant to the unit we are studying. Some can be completed in one day while others might take longer.
  2. You will work in assigned lab groups and will work with your lab group members only.
  3. No horseplay because some labs require the use of chemicals, hot plates, and glassware.
  4. Some, but not all, labs will be collected. Most labs and lab topics will be included in unit quizzes.

Lab Safety Information:

1. All lab procedures must be followed. Please ask questions if you are unsure about the procedure.

2. Remain at your lab station. Do not walk around and visit friends.

3. Everyone must use proper safety equipment when needed.

4. Always ask for directions when disposing of chemicals. Some cannot go down the drain.

5. At the conclusion of the lab session, students should wash their hands with soap and water.

6. Before leaving the lab, the workstation must be clean and dry.
