Tips for talking about feelings
Tips for talking about feelings
- We all have feelings and all feelings are acceptable.
- It's important that we as adults validate their feelings, regardless if we feel they are warranted.
- Sometimes it's hard for kids to talk about feelings and they look towards the adults for help understanding what they are feeling.
- Use of pictures / visuals can help when kids are having a hard time expressing themselves.
- Once kids are able to label/identify their feelings it can be easier to figure out how to support them or strategies for them to use next time they feel that way.
- Common strategies include:
- Taking a break from the activity, person, or area.
- Using deep breathing exercises.
- Engaging in calming activities: drawing, walking, listening to music
- Drinking water or having a snack
- Talking to someone- Figuring out who the student feels most comfortable talking to when upset is important.
