While October 23rd may not mean anything to most people, it marks a defining day for the career of Miami quarterback Dan Marino. Marino was actually drafted by the KC Royals in 1979. He refused the offer, opting instead to play quarterback for Pitt, where he had a successful career. Garnering considerable attention in college, Marino was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 1983 NFL Draft. In his first season, he had 2,210 passing yards and was named Rookie of the Year. The following year, he broke six NFL passing records and led the Dolphins to Super Bowl XIX, where they lost to San Francisco. Four years later, and perhaps one of the greatest moments of his highly successful career, Marino had what most regard as the best passing day in NFL history. On October 23rd in 1988, Marino passed for 521 yards, three touchdowns and completed 35 of 60 against the NY Jets. To this day, Marino is still regarded as one of the best passers in NFL history.Â
