Paul Revere

The soldier was eventually supported by 8 additional soldiers, who were subjected to verbal threats and repeatedly hit by clubs, stones, and snowballs.

Soon a crowd of 400 townspeople were on the scene confronting the soldiers daring them to fire.

They fired into the crowd, without orders, killing five people.

3 days later, Paul Revere produced an engraving depicting the confrontation that was widely distributed throughout the colonies. Its inaccurate portrayal of a well-organized squad of soldiers simultaneously opening fire on a defenseless crowd of citizens.

This helped solidify the colonial opinion against the British and opened the pathway that led to independence 6 years later.
