6th Grade General Music

Sixth grade music is focused on two main topics: learning how to play the piano and how to compose and write a song using GarageBand.

For the first two weeks students learn/review music theory on how to read music notes/rests and how much they are worth. Then we move onto techniques for playing the piano properly and they start reading music notation out of the Hal Leonard Series Accelerated Piano Adventures, Book 1. This book helps them accomplish reading and playing notes in the treble and bass clef. Students learn how to use both hands at the same time and how to play a song from beginning to end without stopping. At the end of the 29 day trimester that I see them, they will have accomplished how to play the famous piece by Mozart, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.

The other half of each day is learning how to use GarageBand. GarageBand is an Apple program that allows students to create music notes from scratch or use pre-recorded loops and create a song. We also talk about how songs follow some sort of pattern and at the end of the project they will have created a song on there own using the musical form of Intro, A, B, A, B, C, B, Outro.
