What is the day in the life like at your job?
My regular day is looking a little different these days, but normally depends on whether it’s a WFH (work from home) day or if I plan on going into the office. Regardless, each day starts with reviewing my to-do list for the day and starting off with the highest priority. Each day is different as far as the work I do, but I always try to schedule a few breaks in between meetings and/or each project’s task.
What do you love about your job?
As a first year, I work on different projects within the same team, so I love that I get to work on different pieces of interesting projects at the same time. Keeps it interesting, diversified, and allows me to expand my skill sets. In any project, I love that I get to play with data to analyze it to create meaningful insights that can help in decision making.
What is challenging about your role?
The most challenging thing I would say is trying to put myself in the shoes of my Senior Managers and Leadership when working on an analysis and thinking about what insights they want to see to make informed decisions. It requires looking at the big picture and understanding the vision/objective and that can be difficult when you’re always working hands-on with the data.
What are the benefits of working in this field?
The biggest benefit I would say is the opportunity for continuous development. There’s always so much to learn and working in Technology is like being in the forefront to witness all the technological advancements of the world. Deloitte is such a big firm and we are always encouraged and presented the chance to learn about technology and so many other topics whenever we want and have the time.
What experiences did you have that prepared you for this role?
I had the opportunity to intern at a large national corporation during my Junior and Senior years of college. On top of that, I had mentors that helped me navigate through career decisions to position me to be where I am today.
What do you see happening in the future for these types of careers?
These careers in Technology, I believe, will always keep advancing and will continue to be in high demand because with the way things are changing nowadays, companies will always need technologists and people that understand the technical as well as the business aspect in order to help them emerge as a leading organization.
What should a student know about your field?
That there are endless opportunities and you don’t have to study a specific track in order to go to where you want to be. A degree in technology can be applied in so many different careers.
What advice do you have for a student considering a career in your profession?
- Always be willing and curious to learn something new.
- Get an internship that will provide the real experience.
- Focus on having a broader knowledge base than focusing on being an expert at one thing.
