Never enough
by Ashlyn harwell
Always moving
Whisking to the tune of my own bowl.
Good at tying perfect bows on a firmly pressed apron.
Hard worker,
Making something out of herself.
Independent.
Working, prepping, flouring, salting, kneading.
I go down the list.
When I stumble,
Bitter.
Add more sugar, vanilla.
Add less because you can’t take out when you put too much in.
Taste test?
Better. Learn from those lessons, alright?
No room for mistakes, baking is a science.
You don’t want to waste.
Authentic
Old fashioned,
Churning
Buttermilk
Butter.
Rolled into a hard, cold lump.
Smooth the harsh edges, you want it to be pretty!
Only smooth edges.
Zesting, squeezing, sweetening.
Sour.
Not enough sugar,
Not enough.
You can never get the amounts right!
Now too much, too sweet, no one is going to want that.
No one is going to want that.
