We're glad you're here!

Welcome to Linn-Benton Community College's "Digital Accessibility at LBCC". With this site, we hope to empower all LBCC employees to work towards LBCC's values of inclusiveness and opportunity by providing the necessary tools and knowledge on how to create accessible course and campus-wide materials and design documents with everyone in mind.

What is Digital Accessibility?

Digital Accessibility, also known as electronic and information technology (EIT) accessibility, generally refers to software, hardware, digital content, and content standards that are used to provide and promote equal access to persons with disabilities. Accessibility means that persons with disabilities can perceive, understand, and navigate information contained in electronic documents. Accessible documents may be read by screen readers, magnification software, speech recognition programs, and other assistive technology without being reformatted.

Why is Digital Accessibility Important?

Digital accessibility is an important component of providing and promoting an equitable, welcoming, and inclusive learning environment and is required by law and regulation. Accordingly, with the routine, extensive, and increasing use of web assets, digital content, and related materials in higher education, it is important to provide resources that are accessible to all individuals. While technology can provide increased opportunities for independence in equal access, it can also present barriers to equal access. This is important for us to remember as we develop classroom and campus-wide materials for students and continue to strive to encompass LBCC's values of opportunity and inclusiveness.

How Can You Do Your Part?

In simplest terms, Universal Design is key. As educators, it is important for us to remember that there are different learning styles and each student is a unique learner. Universal Design is the design and composition of an environment in a way that it can be accessed and understood by all people regardless of their ability or disability. Universal design is not only important for persons with disabilities - ensuring that content is delivered in multiple, various, and perceptible means can be beneficial for everyone in the classroom by increasing overall comprehension. By considering the diverse needs of all learners and their abilities as well as creating and designing course and campus-wide materials with everyone in mind, we can work to ensure that we reach our goals - and help students reach theirs.
