Instrumental Music Classes at Lincoln Schools

High School Band

Enrollment is open to students in grades 9 - 12 who meet at least one of the following prerequisites:

  • Returning members of the high school band who are in good standing
  • Students who have successfully completed band in the middle school level and who possesses the knowledge and skill level to be a productive member of the high school band as determined by the band director
  • Students who have successfully completed Introduction to Band and who possesses the knowledge and skill level to be a productive member of the high school band as determined by the band director
  • Permission of the band director

The Lincoln High School Band functions as The Lincoln Marching Band, The Basketball Pep Band, and Concert Band. It is a performance-based course.

Band is a year long course and students are required to participate in both semesters. In rare circumstances a student may only be able to enroll in only one semester and these situations are handled on a case-by-case basis with permission and recommendation from the band director.

Junior High Band

Enrollment is open to students in the 8th grade who meet the following criteria.

  • Successful completion of Intermediate band.
  • The desire to develop the necessary skills to join the High School Band in 9th grade.
  • Be willing to audition for Region VII All-Region Band.

8th grade band is a year long course and resumes study where intermediate band stopped at the end of the previous school year.

Following 8th Grade Band students will be recommend for membership in the High School Band.

Students who are enrolled in 8th grade Junior High band should do so with the intent of continuing into the high school band.

Intermediate Band

Lincoln Middle School students may choose to join the intermediate band program in the 7th grade. Intermediate band students are 7th graders who have completed beginning band..

Intermediate band is a year long course and is taught using the Standard of Excellence band method. To join intermediate band, students must meet the following criteria

  • Successful completion of Beginning Band.
  • The desire to develop the necessary skills to join the Junior High Band.
  • Provide your own instrument, supplies and accessories.
  • Be willing to perform on the Christmas and Spring concerts as scheduled on the band calendar
  • Be willing to perform at Region VII solo and ensemble.

Students who are enrolled in 7th grade Intermediate band should do so with the intent of continuing into the Junior High school band.


Beginning Band

Lincoln Middle School students may choose to join the Beginning Band in the 6th or the 7th grade. There are 3 different beginning band classes. Beginning Woodwinds, Beginning Bras, and Beginning Percussion. Although normally for 6th grade students, those 7th grade students who wish to join to the band program may do so with the Beginning Band. It is also the entry point for students who wish to be in the Junior High Band, but didn't join the program in 6th grade.

Beginning Band is a year long course and is taught using the Measures of Success Band method.

  • Parents must attend a mandatory meeting with the director. (To be scheduled)
  • Provide your own instrument, supplies and accessories.
  • Be willing to perform on the Christmas and Spring concerts as scheduled on the band calendar
  • Have a simple desire to learn to play a band instrument.


Eighth Grade General Music

Students are required to have a minimum of 40 minutes per week of music class taught by a licensed music teacher. Our 6th graders attend music one day per week.

Sixth grade music is taught as a pre-band class and is used to recruit membership in beginner band the following year.

Students learn the following in 6th Grade Music.

  • Basic percussion and rhythm reading skills.
  • A full introduction and diagnostic testing on the standard instruments used in the beginner band program.
  • Classroom discipline and procedures necessary for successful completion of course.
