Granite Ridge Education Centre, in Sharbot Lake, is a K- 12 site that offers two SHSM programs - Forestry and Health and Wellness. We have a very high completion rate and a number of our graduates have earned recognition and experienced great success as they pursue their desired post-secondary program and employment.

Forestry

As the only Forestry program in LDSB, we are unique by design but then when you add in the beautiful setting of our site, it solidifies our unique nature. Our Forestry program is not just about trees, it is about sustainability, green industries and technology, including our own Drone course. The program operates in second semester where our students register for four major credits. This allows us the opportunity to complete our certifications as a group in the first year and to work with our community partners on a weekly basis. We work within our school and in our community to provide services and education, such as cutting, planting, mapping and identification. Our Forestry students have been instrumental in our community garden providing fresh produce for our food bank. Because of our reputation and quality experience, local businesses, organizations and residential members have contacted us to provide services thereby strengthening our community and our sense of Gryphon pride and GRIT. We have a very high success rate and a number of our Forestry students have gained the skills required to obtain summer employment, acceptance in their desired post-secondary program and gained full-time employment. Our Forestry students literally and figuratively achieve great heights!!

Forestry - Granite Ridge

Pictured here are the two lead Forestry teachers - Shawn Lavender and Wade Leonard. Mr. Lavender teaches Technology (Transportation and Manufacturing), Green Industries and Cooperative Education while Mr. Leonard teaches Geography, Science, History and the Drone course. Both are passionate about environmental issues and love teaching, especially when the learning takes place in our scenic outdoor environment.

Health and Wellness

Health and Wellness is an SHSM program where students can choose their focus by the type of major credits they select. Students selecting more science and physical education courses, including Kinesiology, Phys. Ed. Leadership and our very own Sportology course, would focus on health care or fitness. Students selecting more social science courses such as Parenting, Psychology or Families, would focus more on family services and child care. However, we join together to complete our reach ahead activities through various field trips and while completing our certifications, including First Aid/CPR, teamwork, leadership, communication and conflict resolution. We are fortunate to have many community partners who provide opportunities for students to learn in various settings and practice the skills they have learned in class and developed through the certifications. Being a K-12 site also provides opportunities to practice skills in our own building. Our students have successfully pursued post-secondary in all pathways in the Health Care and Social Services Fields and are so grateful for the opportunities that this program has provided.

Helath and Wellness - Granite Ridge

Melanie Robinson and Ben Moser are the two lead teachers for the Health and Wellness Program at Granite Ridge. Mrs. Robinson teaches primarily Physical and Health Education. Mr. Moser teaches Science, Geography and Physical and Health Education. Both teachers are very passionate about fitness and providing enriching extra-curricular activities as they coach numerous teams throughout all of the seasons. Word of advice - they are both fierce competitors so make sure you are on their team!
