Life with Ankylosing Spondylitis

Life with Ankylosing Spondylitis (LWAS) was created to bring together a community of people who share a rare autoimmune disease called Ankylosing Spondylitis. Whether you think that you may have A.S., have recently been diagnosed, or are an A.S. veteran, this community was built for you to be a part of. Listen to the LWWAS Podcast, join the Living LWAS Support Group, or shop the merch store!

Meet the Ankylosaurus Dinosaur

When I first heard the words, "ankylosing spondylitis," I immediatly thought of the ankylosaurous dinnosaur. Ironically, this is the dinosaur that is well known for it's armored back with spikes. Sometimes, my back feels like this dinosaur's back. When I started Life with Ankylosing SPondylitis, I thought this cute dinosaur would be the perfect representation for LWAS.

About Me

Hi! My name is Mykayla and I started LWAS a few years after being diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis! In August 2022, I experienced a dramatic change in the severity of my symptoms. In December 2022, I had a hip surgery that pushed me over the edge and I really struggled with both my mental and physical health for months. I ultimately decided to quit my 9-5 job and now spend my time to caring for my health, going to college, and running LWAS.

I have a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa and am currently more than half way through my Master's in Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) and Special Education. ABA is a very specific method of intervention of analyzing and changing behavior. My goal is to use my education to help others with disabilities change their life for the better.

I live on Oahu in the beautiful state of Hawaii and have two dogs. Zoey (left) is a golden retriever and Arya (right) is a goberian (golden retriever/ husky mix).
