In LITHUANIA lunch breaks in various schools look a bit different. In our gymnasium we have a whole lesson, 45 minutes, plus two 10 minute breaks before and after it, making it an hour and 5 minutes in total. Younger students have a window during the 4th lesson, we usually have it during the 5th or even the 6th one.
There are quite many things one can do during a lunch break, especially from the 9th grade (younger students can't leave the school territory, while we can go out to the city). Some choose to spend their break studying (especially if they have a test later or haven't finished their homework). We have an amazing library, many go there (it also has hammocks, so you can also sleep or just rest there). Some people hang out with friends, some go to eat in the city or to the school canteen, although it's not the most popular place.
It has two major benefits: it's (usually) cheaper than many restaurants in the center of the town where our gymnasium is and you don't need to go anywhere, so you save some time (which is important if you have some studying to do). Yet a lot of the older students prefer eating elsewhere as the food in the canteen is not very impressive.
Next to our school is a restaurant called "Artistai", which has prices that are quite similar to the canteen's and tastier food, even if not very filling, we love eating there sometimes.
Sometimes people just go to the closest little supermarkets to get some snacks. When the weather gets warmer, some students like to play volleyball, football, "catch" or other games outside. They could run more, too, maybe then it would be safer to walk the corridors in the beginning of a lunch break - 5th graders love running like a stampede all the way to the canteen as soon as the last lesson before the break is over. They run in packs and destroy everything in their way.
In ITALY, we have a lunch break only in elementary school, because in middle school and high school we go out more or less at lunchtime, so we have lunch at home usually. But, if we have a commitment in the afternoon right after school, we have lunch somewhere near school. For example, in front of our school, there is a cafè called “Joele” where the students go often. There are many other places where you can eat nearby, for example, “Vero”, “Frog” and many others. During the school hours, we have a midday recreation that lasts 10 minutes this year (previous years it lasted more). During the recreation, we can go outside, to the courtyard of the school.
Because of Covid, we now have areas to go to for recreation outside and each class has one. During the pandemic, when all of us were learning online, this period lasted 50 minutes and the remaining 10 minutes we had a pause, so we could get away from the computer. Now that all of us are at school, we no longer have those extra minutes of rest besides recreation.
