# What Are We Learning?

## Social Studies & Science

**SOCIAL STUDIES:**

This week in social studies, classes will continue their study of the 4 major regions of Texas. Students will focus on **identifying** each region, **locating** them on a map, and **comparing and contrasting** the different reagions based on their features. Finally after comparing the regions, students will decide which region they would want to live in and provide reasons why.

**SCIENCE:**

In science classes we are continuing with how real scientists do it with "I Am a Scientist" and learning about different lab tools and demonstrating safe practices. Students will also have opportunities to use their new knowledge of science safety and tools while learning about and practicing the scientific method through various experiments in class.

**How old is she? **

We are using what we have learned about place value to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000.

Students are expected to round numbers into the 100,000's to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000.

Remember:

**When rounding to the nearest 10,** if the number ends in a 0,1,2,3,4 it is rounded down. If it ends in a 5,6,7,8,9 the number is rounded up to the next ten.

**When rounding to the nearest 100**, if the last 2 digits of a number are 00-49 then the number rounds down. If the number ends in 50-99 then the number rounds up to the next hundred.

**When rounding to the nearest 1,000, **if the last 3 digits of a number end in 000-499 then the number rounds down. If the last 3 digits are 500-999, the number rounds up to the next 1,000.

Example:

Round 1,568 to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000

- The Nearest 10 - It ends in an 8 so I round up to the next 10 = 1,570
- The Nearest 100- The last 2 digits are 68 so I round up to the next 100 = 1,600.
- The nearest 100- The last 3 digits are 568 so I round up to the next 1,000= 2,000.

**Some questions you can ask your child to support their thinking:**

- What are numbers and how are numbers used in everyday life?
- Why is it important to understand the rounding of numbers
- When might you use rounding (or estimation) in real life?

### *Please make sure your child is practicing their basic multiplication facts and fact fluency each night for 15 minutes. This is a major skill that 4th graders are expected to have mastered by the end of the year.

## Reading & Writing

**READING:**

This week in reading, classes will continue their focus on fictional stories.

**The featured skills for this week:**

- Retell, summarize or paraphrase texts that show meaning and order
- Plot Elements

This week in reading classes students will focus on **retelling**, ** paraphrasing **or

**summarizing**fictional texts. They will also foucs on meaning and providing a logical order with in their summaries.

Students will need to understand that retelling, parapharasing and summarizing should include some details but focus on the big events of the story and that these events happen in a particular order.

**Some questions you can ask your child while reading with them:**

- What events happended at the beginning, middle, and end of the story?
- Tell me what happened in the story in order?
- What are the important events that happened in the story?
- How do the important events affect the ending of story?
- Ask while reading: What is happening in the story up to this point?
- How are the important events in the story related?
- Summarize the story you have just read.

### *There is so much to learn - you can support your child by reading with them 30 minutes every night!

**WRITING:**

This week in writing we will continue writing in our Writer's Notebooks and reading mentor texts to understand the purpose of our Writer's Notebooks.

Also, students will use a target "thinking map" to help them brainstorm or list their favorite of favorite things. This will lead to and help them understand how to organize their thoughts, but also "zoom" in on or focus the smaller parts to begin writing paragraphs. The idea is to help them become comfortable and gain confidence with their writing.

We will also discuss unfamiliar words in a text and how to use context clues to help us understand their meaning or definition.
