This question is not as easy to answer as it may appear, and perhaps not even the most important question to ask. You might think in terms of the most widely spoken languages in the world or your region (Linguists estimate some 7,000 languages spoken on this planet), but there are lots of good reasons to study different languages.
Some choose a language because they find it beautiful—a very subjective idea, but perfectly valid.
Some choose a language based on family heritage or previous travel experience.
Others are already thinking of future careers.
Learning any second language is worth your time, regardless of your reasons for choosing it. It’s about widening your cultural perspectives and what you love.
There is no wrong answer. We hope that our students will graduate high school with proficiency in another language!
Chinese is the most widely spoken first language in the world.
Learning Chinese opens a unique window into one of the world’s most ancient civilizations: you will learn Chinese history, cultural values, philosophical and religious beliefs, and aesthetic traditions.
Knowledge of the Chinese language and culture is a valuable asset for careers in government, international relations, finance, tourism, translation, teaching, and more.
So that you can have access to an unbroken literary tradition of more than 3000 years: Tang poetry, the Journey to the West, the Dream of the Red Chamber, Madam White Snake, and the Butterfly Lovers. And learn about the movies by Zhang Yimou, Ang Lee, and other directors; about ‘model plays’, martial arts films, and novels; about the spelling system called pinyin, the traditional and simplified characters, and the distinction between ‘language’ and ‘dialect’.
So that you can learn something special – learn Chinese, and learn about its culture!
