Write words on an index card using a highlighter and have child trace over what you wrote. Then have him or her "pop it" around the whiteboard 5 times each.
Ask if she or he has ever had a hard day. Ask them to talk about what happened that made it a hard day.
Take a picture walk.
Look at the "words to know" section of the book. Point to the word, read it out loud and then point to child to indicate it is their turn to read the word. You can also do flash cards and mix them up to go through the words a couple of times if you want. (Words: lunch, phone, shoes, swimming, tie, wet)
Focus strategy: Lips the Fish. Show poster (click link) and remind child that when he or she gets stuck, try the beginning sound and look at the picture. Also remind them to read with their finger.
During Reading
Read with finger
Encourage reading strategy (look at the beginning sound)
Support and encourage words that are read correctly with verbal praise

Write the words on the white board
Have child make the words with magnet letters
Take one of the letters away, ask them what is missing
Mix up the letters and have him or her put it back together
Have him or her dictate a sentence as you write it. Ask child to read the sentence and point to each word as they read it.
Practice color words- match cards. Cut index cards in half. Color one half and write the color on the other half. Mix the cards up. Let child match the cards up correctly.
You can also print out the coloring book below and he or she can practice with it.
