Write word on an index card using a highlighter and have child trace over what you wrote. Then have them "pop it" around the whiteboard 5 times.
Ask if he or she has ever made anything with paper. Ask them how they made it.
Take a picture walk.
Look at the "words to know" section of the book. Point to the word, read it out loud and then point to child to indicate it is their turn to read the word. You can also do flash cards and mix them up to go through the words a couple of times if you want. (Words: change, fold, glue, paper, tape, tear)
Focus strategy: Lips the Fish. Show poster (click link) and remind them that when they get stuck, try the beginning sound and look at the picture. Tell child they can switch between different strategies to help him or her. Also remind child to read with their finger.
During Reading
Read with finger
Encourage reading strategy (look at the beginning sound)
Support and encourage words that are read correctly with verbal praise
Point out the capital letter and period

After Reading
Ask: What are two things you can do to paper?
Make something with paper. With adult help, write instructions. The adult can write the instructions and child can copy the words under adult's words. (Example: How To Make a Paper Moon..... 1-Cut paper in circle. 2- Glue grey pieces to the circle. 3- Tape paper to the wall.)
New words: you, can, fun
Write the words on the white board
Have child make the words with magnet letters
Take one of the letters away, ask them what is missing
Mix up the letters and have him or her put it back together
Have him or her dictate a sentence as you write it. Ask child to read the sentence and point to each word as they read it.
Practice color words- match cards. Cut index cards in half. Color one half and write the color on the other half. Mix the cards up. Let child match the cards up correctly.
