"Our goal is to create a strong community of students interested in exploring Turkish culture and language. The following bullets contain the activities that the club will consider organizing:Â
Backgammon tournament: One of the most popular games in Turkey is Backgammon. It is recognized by people all over the world. Holding games and/or tournaments would be a fun way to connect with others. For the tournament, we are thinking of using that as both a way for people to connect with each other, and also as a way to fundraise for the underprivileged students in Turkey. We will be able to do this by making a small entry fee around $3-5, and then using a small portion of the money to get a small gift for the winner, then using the remaining money to send to Turkish students in need.
Supporting new students: Meeting new people in a new environment can be stressful, especially in a big community like LHS. One of our main goals for the Turkish Club is to create a welcoming environment and support system for incoming 9th graders, new students, and all students who would like to meet new people and collaborate, and to learn about a new culture.
Collaborating with other clubs: The Turkish Club is open to collaborate with other clubs, such as the Cooking Club, to teach students about Turkish cuisine.
Celebrating Turkish holidays: Turkey has many holidays that differ from American holidays. On these holidays, we plan to celebrate them and teach the same way they would in Turkey.
Academic support: We will provide academic support from upperclassmen for students who are in need of help in any subject.
Invite guest speakers: We would consider the opportunity to invite professionals in various fields to discuss their career and what they work on with our club members to help guide our career choices.
Movies/Sports: We can watch classic Turkish movies in English dub or subtitles, and we can also watch Turkish sports matches (does not have to be live) including, but not limited to, basketball, soccer, and volleyball.
