Case Studies

ELA

In ELA, we were tasked with answering the question: Are essential workers heroes? We started by first looking at the Hero's Journey. The Hero's Journey is a story where a normal person becomes a hero. We read the novel, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief as an example of the Hero's Journey. Then we looked at everyday community members who are also heroes. A hero does not need to be someone who saves lives. You can also be a hero by helping those in need. Many of our community members were heroes last spring during the beginning of the pandemic and continue to be heroes as they help to make our life easier as we still cope with COVID-19.

Science

In our science expedition, we had to answer the question: How does a circuit relate to a community? To do this, we designed a community that had to include powerlines and essential workers. We started by deciding what buildings would be needed for our essential workers to do their job. Once we had buildings, we had to map them out within our community and connect them by roads. After this, we then had to connect the buildings with a circuit to ensure that each essential worker had power so that they could perform their job. We displayed our work on a piece of poster board using a key. The blue that connected everything is the powerline and the buildings, B1 is the electrician/power plant, and U1 is the essential worker.

Math

In math, we researched essential workers who traveled for their job. We planned routes across the state and determined how many miles they traveled using proportional reasoning. Along with this, we also created Day in the Life stories to showcase the different jobs and duties these essential workers perform. After we completed the Storyline Template we had to create a visual creation of our template through Google Docs or Google Slides. The creation of a visual representation for our storyline was very fun and exciting.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, we were tasked with creating a book cover on a specific Greek God. This project was based on a book we read in ELA, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. We were told we would choose one of the twelve main Greek Gods and make a book cover for whichever one of these Gods represented us the most. This was in the perspective of us being the child of that Greek God.
