SATURDAY, November 6, 2021 - Still in the continuation of Paaralang Roger Sese’s weekly journalism trainings, the UPLB Perspective commenced their second round of their workshop dealing with the topics: Infographics Making (10 AM), Broadcast Journalism (2:30 PM), and OBS/Streaming (4 PM), held via Zoom Meeting and Facebook Livestream last November 6, 2021.
Starting from the first topic which is Infographics Making, Ms. Maan and Mr. Charles, the webinar hosts, introduced the resource speaker, Mr. Ian Raphael Lopez, an Editor-in-Chief of Forward who is also currently studying BS Development Communication in University of the Philippines Los Baños.
He opened his discussion with an in-depth introduction of himself together with his hobbies, previous jobs, and achievements. Mr. Lopez then started to explain the important representations of infographics, its goals and ways we can improve it. “It's like another way of expressing a story,” Mr. Lopez remarked as he further expounded the topic regarding infographics.
He also added the things that people will need to achieve a better understanding of how they would be able to create infographics — for example, the newspapers from Inquirer and BusinessWorld. Mr. Lopez then proceeded to present the four essential steps to create an infographic: Research, Edit, Plot, and Review, which he thoroughly taught the audience. He also tackled the different uses of charts and graphs for different situations when creating infographics, and the data points at which people should follow.
Moreover, for the audience to have an idea regarding the concept and structure of an infographic, he presented some newspaper examples that encapsulated a good infographic as they showed the data and information being given to the readers of the news.
As Mr. Lopez finished his discussion, the audience was given the opportunity to ask the speaker some questions about the topic. It was then followed by the closing remarks of Mr. Lopez and the hosts as well.
Moving on with Broadcast Journalism, the second part of the workshop started off by introducing the speaker for the said topic. It was none other than Mr. Guein Garma, the host of Dito sa Laguna Season 32, Podcaster of NCN: News Conventions Now, and the host and project leader of BIDANI NutriLive in Radyo DZLB.
Mr. Garma started his discussion by sharing examples of him working in a Radio Broadcasting Team. He shared his experience about being on Radio Stations, one of it is the podcast on NCN where he is the host, broadcaster, director, layout, making quite an all-arounder during that time.
To formally start his lecture, he divided his discussion into four (4) parts. The first part of his discussion was about the Nature of Broadcast Media. According to him, there are common attributes of Radio and Television, such as; Universality, Popularity, Diversity, Immediacy, Use of Sound (and Video), Impermanence, Reusability, and Research and then explained these attributes one-by-one. “Madaming pagpipilian, not just the general news,” he remarked.
Mr. Garma discussed his second part of the discussion after which was about Delivering the Broadcast News. In delivering, there are three parts. First is the Straight News where the anchors just read the script. Second is the Live Reports, it describes the happenings and through the magic of broadcasting, the news can be delivered, and lastly, Packages, wherein it is just the reported report.
Following his discussion was the topic of Writing for Broadcast News. Mr. Garma was also the one who gave the general principles on writing broadcast news. He stated that in writing for broadcast news, it’s not necessary to write a long script. It just needs to be straight to the point. Languages should be understandable for the audience, also, in writing — it should be informal and conversational, talk casually with the audience.
He also explained the difference in scripts between the radio and television/AC whereas in radio, it needs to avoid bureautic languages, use simple words to describe, and always use present tense. Meanwhile in television audio, it should be related to the visuals that are presented, consider the anchor’s ingredient, and use linear clarity.
Mr. Garma then expounded some common terms used in audio and video. In audio, the different sound effects, music, and audio itself, while in the video, the angles and sounds to be used. Continuing his discussion, Mr. Garma further explained and described the script structure of the radio script. He also gave some writing tips to writers and also discussed choosing sound bites.
The last part of his lecture was all about Broadcast Speech and Performance Practical Tips. He gave five tips which are to modulate, do relaxation exercises, find your voice, find the sound or style befitting on the person, and look for a distinguishing trait that will set them apart from the rest.
As his discussion neared its end, he shared a quote from Will McAvoy, “Nothing is more important to a democracy than a well-informed electorate.”
Concluding the second topic, the participants were given a chance to ask questions for the Question and Answer portion, and they were asked to turn on their cameras for a photo opportunity with the speaker.
Advancing to the third and last topic for the 2nd Workshop for Paaralang Roger Sese, OBS Streaming, which was presented by Mr. Gerard Laydia, the Production Editor for UPLB perspective, Director, and a Community broadcaster.
Mr. Laydia started with sharing the achievements and examples of their works, followed by the difficulties that they faced back when they were just beginning their careers. He presented 2 video examples of their Live Broadcast Streaming and OBS streaming.
He explained how their Live Streaming segment, “Perspective Live”, was produced in order to address the chronic issues that they observed in publications: low counts of readers, the continuous silencing of journalists, and issues regarding the local government.
Mr. Laydia then started his discussion about the Elements of Online Live Broadcasting, he explained how the host screen, ticker, visuals and lower thirds should be balanced, in order to be appealing to the eyes of the audiences. He added how there could be different ways we can use these elements to match with the topic of the live broadcasts.
