SATURDAY, January 15, 2022 - In commemoration of their 104th years serving the studentry through fair and objective journalism, the CLSU Collegian, official student publication of Central Luzon State University, conducted their first stop of "Suhay: Sumulong at Sumulat," a Journalism Skills Training covering Feature Writing or “Pagsulat ng Lathalain”. Various groups and student publications, including the Letran SHS Fourth Estate, participated in the Zoom Conference and Facebook Livestream webinar.
Mr. Daniel Aquino and Ms. Jonalyn Bautista, the master of ceremonies, introduced Ms. Aileen Shaye Fontanilla, a former Feature and Literary Editor for CLSU Collegian and a Campus Journalism Awardee for the College Leve. Ms. Fontanilla started her lecture as she defined Feature Writing and highlighted how important the story is to readers.
She also highlighted the importance of precise and relevant headlines as well as introductions to give readers hints of what the shared feature articles are all about. As Ms. Fontanilla discussed writing feature articles, she reiterated that the body and conclusion must always be relevant.
Furthermore, she explained the kinds of Feature Articles such as News Feature, Information Feature, Human Interest, and others. Given those, she provided some tips in writing — one of which was knowing your audience or reader. She also emphasized the importance of relevance and the need to have a sense of control in writing.
Emcees then opened the forum for the question and answer part of the lecture. As participants asked for her advice, she stated that one must write in a sincere manner. The hosts then revealed a surprise for the participants — a competition for Feature Writing. For further information, Ms. Bautista and Mr. Aquino went over the rules for the said contest.
Afterwards, they called on Mr. Junior Pacol, a Vivencio Saulong Lifetime Awardee and a College Instructor at CLSU, delivered his closing remarks. After a few minutes allocated for photo opportunity and the certificates of participation, the first stop of SUHAY concluded.
