LEARNING

FINANCIAL EDUCATION

We know how important it is for us to prepare all our pupils for their future lives and we always seek to ensure that the curriculum we deliver at Cheam Park Farm is both stimulating and relevant. Over the past two years, we have developed our Financial Education curriculum. This has proved to be a real success and children across the school are clearly benefiting from these lessons.

Our Financial Education lessons are taught in all year groups at Cheam Park Farm. We aim for all our pupils to leave Year 6 equipped with the skills they need to make sensible financial choices and to be aware of current money matters. Financial Education is taught both by our teachers and also through exciting virtual workshops with Natwest and Metro Bank to make learning relevant and bring lessons to life.

Currently in EYFS and KS1 children are learning about 'Needs and Wants', 'Choices About Spending and Saving Money', and enjoying money role-play opportunities.

Year 3 and 4 children are learning about 'Prioritising Money' and making 'Money Resolutions'.

Year 5 and 6 children are learning about 'Different Currencies' and 'Value for Money'.

Follow us on Twitter for more Financial Education updates throughout the year.

EXCELLENCE

MATHS QUIZ CLUB

This week, years 5 and 6 took part in the Maths Quiz Club area heat. Each year group had their own area heat which tested their mental maths and problem solving skills. Both teams took the quiz in their stride and worked incredibly well as a team. Some of the questions were really tough and all the team members showed remarkable perseverance.

Year 5 narrowly missed getting a place in the next round but our year 6 team came joint 4th which was enough to take them through!

On Friday every week we award two children per class a 'Star of The Week' certificate. This is given to children who have impressed their teachers throughout the course of the week. We also give one child per class a 'Be The Best You Can Be' certificate for demonstrating our Excellent Learner values. Winners for the last two weeks are.....

OPPORTUNITY

VIRTUAL CLASSROOM

This term, many of our children have had the new experience of being taught virtually and, for those currently at home, accessing 'live lessons' along with their classmates at school. This approach to teaching and learning really has proved to be a resounding success with very positive feedback from children and parents alike. Our teachers are delighted by how smooth the introduction of this new form of lesson delivery has been. This is in large part down to all the time and effort they have put in, ensuring lessons delivered in this way are of the highest quality.

In these difficult times, we are proud that all our children can continue to access the quality first education we seek to deliver whether they are at home or at school.

NEWS

Anti-Bullying Week

Last week, the whole school enjoyed anti bullying week, kicking off with Odd Socks Day where all the children wore odd socks to celebrate being individual and unique.

Each year group also enjoyed watching an online show from Open Education and participated in lots of discussions and activities. The younger children learnt about being united against bullying, showing courage and kindness. The older year groups found out about being stronger together and how a joke between friends can sometimes go too far.

The week was an excellent reminder to the children about how to treat each with respect and what to do if they think they are bullied.

Wellbeing Day

Today we have been taking part in our Autumn term 'Wellbeing Day' with lots of activities across the school to raise awareness of the importance of both a healthy mind and body and to promote different ways of supporting our own and each other’s wellbeing. Year groups have tried out all sorts of different techniques: opportunities to practise mindfulness (including breathing exercises and guided meditations), physical exercise, the chance to share hobbies or showcase talents, and also lots of self-esteem and team-building activities.

School Streets Scheme

The London Borough of Sutton barrier schemes is continuing on Kingston Avenue with this road closed for access between 8:20am and 8:50am and 2:45pm to 3:30pm other than for residents who live in the road, school staff, blue badge holders and any pupils with mobility or learning issues who need to be driven up to the school gate.

London Borough of Sutton's Sustainable Travel team are seeking more volunteers from the school community to support this initiative. If you have any availability within these hours and would like to become involved, please email cpfsupport@leoacademytrust.co.uk to let us know.

Many thanks to parents who have already volunteered to support with this scheme.

COVID Guidance for Schools

Further to updated DfE guidance, all classrooms will continue to be ventilated (windows will be open), even in the winter. We therefore advise children to bring in additional (warm) clothing such as a hoodie or jumper. This can be kept at school on their peg. PLEASE ENSURE ALL ITEMS OF CLOTHING ARE LABELLED WITH THE CHILD'S FULL NAME. Please note that this clothing does not need to be in line with school uniform. If you have any questions regarding this matter please email the school office.

LEO Sports Virtual Competition

Every month, LEO will be holding a virtual sports competition for all children across the Trust. To find out more, please click on the image below.

Today is the last day for entry into this month's challenge!

COVID UPDATES

This section of our newsletter gives you any updates as they occur regarding the ongoing changes due to Covid. We will update links below with the latest government and Department for Education guidance as well as share with you any changes made in school as we react to these updates.

Sending Children Into School

Please ensure that you are not sending any child into school who is displaying one of the three symptoms of Coronavirus in children (high temperature, new continuous cough or a loss of smell/taste). Please note, children DO NOT need to be displaying all three of these symptoms. If they are displaying any one of these symptoms then your child should not be in school. We also remind all parents that if one child is suffering from any one of these symptoms then the whole family must stay away from school. DO NOT send a sibling of a child with these symptoms into school. We are relying on parents providing us with accurate information as to why your child is not in school so please help us to fully understand your child's symptoms so that we can support the entire school community as best we can. You may find this flowchart useful for deciding if you should send your child into school.

Latest Guidance

We will always signpost you to the most up-to-date guidance regarding Coronavirus via this button. Please familiarise yourself with this information regularly so that you are aware of any changes.

School Drop Off and Pick Up

Many thanks to parents for adhering to our procedures for drop off and collection. We feel the system is working well and we continue to welcome any suggestions for further improvements. Please continue to ensure that you are adhering to these measures: wearing masks and maintaining distance from each other and staff members during drop off and collection.

Teachers are available to speak to before and after school, but this should be used for quick messages only. Longer discussions should be held in an arranged appointment time. Please email the school office to arrange this: cpfpoffice@leoacademytrust.co.uk

Please find more guidance on face masks here:

NEW STAFF MEMBERS

This term, we are pleased to have welcomed several new members of staff to Cheam Park Farm. All have settled in very well and really have become part of the Cheam Park Farm team.

Click here to meet our new members of staff.

SCHOOL FUND

We pride ourselves on offering our children varied and exciting experiences and activities that help to support their learning of the curriculum. The School Fund will allow us to provide additional activities across all year groups.

We have a voluntary school fund donation of £10 a term / £30 a year per child or £40 for a family if there are siblings at the school.

Parents can pay for School Fund online via our Arbor payment system. Log into the parent portal and on your child's home screen under accounts you will see School Fund, click into this and select Top Up Account. You can then choose to pay the £10 or £30, if paying for a family for £40 please pay on your eldest child's account). Please ignore the weekly payments, you just need to make the one off payment for either the term or academic year as you choose.

We would like to thank you for your continued support.

LOST PROPERTY

Whilst we have Lost Property locations on both sites, we are aware that some children have lost items that haven't been located yet. Please can we politely request that parents check name labels inside jumpers, cardigans etc. to ensure that your child doesn't have items of clothing belonging to another child. It also seems timely to remind parents that all items of clothing should be named so that we can easily return them to their rightful owner. Thank you for your assistance with this.

SCHOOL NURSING SERVICE

Children, young people and families with any concerns can contact the school nursing service via phone or email. For parents, the school nursing duty line number is 0208 770 5409 and is open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. For children and young people who require support, the contact number is 0208 770 4409 from Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, or the email address is schoolnursing@sutton.gov.uk

SUPPORTING PUPILS IN SCHOOL WITH MEDICAL CONDITIONS

Cheam Park Farm Primary Academy wishes to ensure that pupils with medical conditions receive appropriate care and support at school. This policy has been developed in line with the Department for Education’s guidance released in April 2014 – “Supporting pupils at school with medical conditions”.

Please ensure all asthma inhalers and Epipens are in date.

When a child is prescribed medication such as antibiotics ask the GP for one that can be taken three times a day – before school, after school and before bed.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

We often have job opportunities that arise somewhere across the LEO Academy Trust. You can access details about jobs via the images here or keep checking the LEO Staff Vacancies section of the website by clicking here.

PACKED LUNCHES

Many of our children bring packed lunches into school and we are very pleased with the time parents take to ensure the contents of the lunches are healthy. As a 'Healthy School' we would like to avoid children eating sugary food items in school. We also suggest no more than 5 items in the lunchbox so that children have time to play outside as well as eat lunch.

We would also like to remind all parents and carers that our school is a Nut Free school. This means that no child should be bringing anything into school either in their packed lunch box or as a morning snack that contains nuts. This includes spreads such as peanut butter, nutella etc. in sandwiches. We have children attending our school who suffer from severe nut allergies and, as such, cannot be exposed to any form of nuts.

Thank you for your support and understanding in ensuring that all of our children are kept safe in school.

PTFA

12 Days of Christmas

The PTFA's new event, '12 Days of Christmas', is proving very popular. Many thanks to all the parents who have signed up for this already. The PTFA is busy behind the scenes putting your requests together and will be in touch in due course.

CHRISTMAS CARDS

As we have only three weeks of term left, we know children will be keen to start bringing in Christmas cards. Due to our bubble restrictions, please can we ask that children only give cards in school to others in their class bubble. Many thanks for your co-operation with this and fingers crossed we will be able to have the post box out again this time next year on Molesey site!

CHRISTMAS SHOEBOXES

Many thanks to parents and children who have put in so much time and effort filling shoe boxes with gifts for children who may not otherwise receive a present at Christmas. They look wonderful and will no doubt be very gratefully received.

The charity Teams4U, which supports some of the poorest children in Romania and Moldovia, as well as children in need across the world, will ensure that the shoe boxes are transported and delivered in time for Christmas.

Please click here to find out more about this very worthwhile charity.

CHILDREN'S SOCIETY

As a school, we have signed up to the Children's Society.

The Children's Society fights for the hope and happiness of young people when it is threatened by abuse, exploitation and neglect.

Without support, this society couldn't help young people through their most serious life challenges and it also improve the lives of those who need hope most. We are looking forward to joining in with and promoting events that this very worthy charity has planned.

VOLUNTEERS IN SCHOOL

Many thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help in school this term. We always welcome parents in school helping in classes and we are pleased to let you know that we can continue to do this this term. We know how much our children benefit from this additional support, especially at the moment when so much time in school has been missed.

Please complete this form if you are interested in helping in school.

All PTFA helpers and volunteers in class are required to complete Safeguarding training and provide a current DBS certificate. Contact the office on either school site for advice on this.

PARENT WORKSHOPS

The Wellbeing team at Sutton Uplift have agreed to run some free workshop sessions for our parents starting with one called:

'Maintain Your Wellbeing as a Parent/Carer'

This is a one-off workshop covering the following topics:

- Taking care of yourself

- Overcoming barriers

- Communication

- Reactions

- Problem Solving

- Relaxation Techniques

This parent/carer workshop has previously been delivered at other schools around the borough with great success. Many of the attendees have valued being amongst others who are going through similar experiences, whilst also learning concepts and techniques that can help them maintain a more positive lifestyle.

Please see this link to the Sutton Uplift flyer for more information.

Active Movement

Active Movements new have developed this Active Lockdown infographic-‘Isolating at Home as part of their Health at Home initiative.

It provides schools with Top Tips for children and families self-isolating at home to keep healthy.

For further information and ideas of how to look after your mental and physical health on the “Health at Home” website, visit: www.activemovement.co.uk

ATTENDANCE

We know that children having good attendance and punctuality has a direct impact on how well your child gets on in school. Children who attend frequently are far more likely to achieve academic success than those with poor attendance who tend to fall behind in their learning.

ABSENCE

If your child is absent from school, please complete this form with the reason for this absence. This will then go directly to our office staff.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS, because...

  • Children with good attendance achieve much better in their learning

  • Time off disrupts learning for you child, and also for the rest of the class

  • Children who miss school miss out on their right to a full education

  • It is your legal responsibility to ensure that your child attends school regularly

  • Persistent unauthorised absence could lead to court action, including fines

POST BOX

A reminder to everyone that the post box outside the main entrance (M) is secure and can be used as a drop off point for communication. It is opened every day.
