NC Hub Newsletter
Friday 15th January 2021
Our new school term brings with it new arrangements for our children's learning, whether they are at home or at school. Cheam Park Farm Primary Academy and Brookfield Primary Academy continue to work together to provide education for pupils across both schools. As ever, our priority remains to ensure that our pupils have access to the highest quality education. All our staff across both schools continue to work extremely hard preparing lessons and exciting activities that can be accessed both at home and at school. We would like to thank parents for your wonderful, positive comments regarding your children's engagement with and enjoyment of the lessons and activities that have been provided so far.
The newsletter we will be sending out weekly this term will include a section for each year group, celebrating pupils' learning across both schools. We will also include any news updates and other important information for parents.
Early Years
The Nursery children have been learning about number 2 this week; what it looks like, how to write it, and representing the number with their fingers. They also went around their home selecting groups of 2 items. Lots of fun was also had in our shape hunt when the children searched for circles, or circle shapes in objects. The children were introduced to Dough Disco; squeezing and pressing their fingers into the dough to develop finger strength to help them with writing. As you can see in the photo, this was thoroughly enjoyed!
The Reception children have had a busy week learning about time. They have completed 1 minute challenges, seeing how many star jumps, hops and claps they can do in this time. They also explored clocks and looked closely at the numbers they could find on them. They began to read and make o’clock times! What superstars!
Year 1
Year 1 have been very busy this week acting out the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and produced some fantastic descriptive setting and character writing. We also imagined we had some magic beans and described what they would grow into!
In Maths we have been learning about probability including chance and in Science we became material detectives and went on a material hunt around the school and home.
Year 2
What a busy week! In English we created an information poster about owls. They were really eye catching! We have also been looking at the character of Plop from ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’. We thought about questions we could ask him and seeing how he changed from the beginning to the end of the story.
This week in maths we have been measuring using metres and centimeters and comparing objects. In art we have had great fun creating Andy Warhol inspired artwork.
Year 3
In English, we have been learning about persuasive posters with catchy slogans to promote our own chocolate bars. The children created some amazing adverts.
In maths we learned to interpret different types of picture graph.
Year 4
In science this half term, the children have been learning about sound. Last week we looked at the human ear and how it helps us to hear sounds. This week we have looked at vibrations and how they are similar to sound waves.
At the end of the lesson, we looked at measuring and comparing sounds around the local area to see how loud they are and whether it is a high or low pitch.
Year 5
Year 5 have been working incredibly hard this week! We have been amazed by their writing! They have written a different story starter each day. The standard has been inspiring! This one described a video of a sea landscape we watched :
In maths, we have continued with area and perimeter and in topic we have been looking at renewable energy and creating fish and other animal pictures. Here are a few examples of some great work!
Archie (Moonstone Class) decided to make a house out of a box and added sliding doors and lights! An excellent DT project, well done Archie!
Year 6
Year 6 have had a very busy week! In maths, we have been looking at volume and now understand the formula used to find the volume of cubes and cuboids. We have also solved various word problems about volume in 3D shapes. In English, we have been looking at different ways to start a story and have written four different story openers based on different pictures. In science, we have started looking at our new topic of ‘Evolution and Inheritance’ and have looked at what is passed on through our genes.
