NC Hub Newsletter

Friday 5th March 2021

This week is our final Cheam Park Farm and Brookfield joint newsletter. It has been great for our two schools to come together over the past few weeks and lots of new friendships have been formed. We will continue to work very closely with each other. Teachers in both schools are planning together on a regular basis and this will continue when everyone is back in school, enhancing provision and opportunities for all our children.

We know how much everyone is looking forward to returning on Monday. You will have received details regarding this via email.

Early Years

In Topic, Nursery have been learning all about caterpillars and how they turn into butterflies. We read the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar and used it to inspire our drawing, writing and mark making. In Phonics, the children have learnt their second sound, ‘a,’ learning to write it and thinking about words which start with it. In Maths, we have learnt all about the number 8 as our number of the week, as well as practicing the numbers previously taught.

This week Reception has enjoyed reading Tiddler and exploring an unders the sea theme. They have created sea creature pictures, taken part in cosmic kids under the sea yoga and written fish poems. They have used number lines to complete addition calculations and have explored the weather and created weather diaries. All the children took part in World Book Day, dressing up as their favourite book character, sharing stories and making bookmarks.

Year 1

Year 1 have once again been very busy this week! In English we enjoyed the story ‘Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car’ and came up with our own animal excuses and animal dictionaries. We were brilliant at sorting animals into alphabetical order! In Maths we worked so hard finding 10 more and 10 less and solving lots of tricky maze challenges. In Topic we found out all about the history of cars and made some fantastic dental hygiene videos. We also had a wonderful World Book Day! Take a look…

Year 2

It’s been another busy week in Year 2. We planned and wrote their own Explorer Adventure stories this week. We’ve been on great adventures like being chased by polar bears in the Artic and being rescued by helicopters! In maths we have continued our work on data handling.

We also had a fantastic World Book Day dressing up and doing activities based on our book ‘Mae Among the Stars!

Year 3

In Year 3 we linked World Book Day and Arts Week. Children were asked to work on an extract from Mr Gum and the Biscuit Billionaire and draw one of the characters. They looked for clues in the text to draw the character. For our topic ‘Misty Mountains’ we sorted out different features of a mountain and then we created our own fact file of a mountain. During our class meets, we learned how to draw different things using Nearpod. (Art week)

Year 4

Year 4 had an interesting science lesson finding out of gases weigh anything. We part filled bottles with fizzy liquids and shook them. Then we released the gas and weighed them a second time to see if they lost weight and they did.

Year 5

What a busy week! From learning about animals that live in the Amazon Jungle at the beginning of the week to our favourite authors at the end. Both children and staff at Brookfield and Cheam Park Farm have thoroughly enjoyed working together during lockdown.

In Topic we completed fact files about animals that call the Amazon their home. In English, the children have been focusing on narratives. Using chapters of The Explorer for inspiration, they have written about an imaginary caiman attack.

Year 6

Year 6 has had a great week. In English, they were tasked with writing their own versions of chapter 16 in the perspective of the Wolf. They came up with some brilliant versions. We were very impressed. The children have been revising what they have learnt this term in maths including: perimeter, area, volume and averages. It was great to see many children challenge themselves throughout the lessons. During the topic lesson, they asked to imagine themselves as an evacuee. They had to fill their suitcase with items they would take if they were evacuated and explain why. There were many interesting discussions around the different items that were being packed.

Keeping Our School COVID Safe

We would like to remind families to be mindful that, if a family member is not feeling well and you are considering booking a COVID test, please do not send children into school before the test and before you have received a negative result. A positive result has such a big impact on our school community in terms of bubbles of children having to be sent home, staff and children having to isolate and key workers not being able to work.
