It's been another busy and exciting week! Year 6 Sports Leaders kicked off the week with some fantastic training, while our Year 1 embraced the outdoors visiting Forest School. We are also celebrating Black History Month, and our Reception families had a wonderful opportunity to connect with teachers during our "Meet the Teacher" meeting. Year 5 boys showed great sportsmanship in their football match against Cheam Common Juniors, and we wrapped up the week with a cosy Pyjama Day for Census!

Celebrating Black History Month 

This October, we're proud to celebrate Black History Month. Mrs Agbo led a fantastic assembly to kick things off, sharing this year's powerful theme: "Reclaiming Narratives." Throughout the month, we'll be exploring the inspiring stories of Black heroes and the incredible impact of Black individuals across history and in our world today. We have a wonderful selection of books and stories to share with the children over the coming weeks, so please do encourage them to explore these resources and learn more. 

Wear it Pink 

Let's turn the school pink! On Friday 25th October, we'll be supporting Wear it Pink day to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and breast cancer awareness. Join us from 9am to 11am for a fun-filled morning with stalls organised by our Year 6, who will also be taking part in a fabulous fashion show. Please note that the car park will be closed, so please enter via the front of the school. We hope to see you there, decked out in your finest pink attire! 

Lunchtime Reminders

Please remind your children of the importance of following our school rules during lunchtime in the hall.  We want everyone to enjoy their lunch in a positive and respectful environment.

Key Reminders:

• We line up quietly.

• We stay in our seats until we have finished our lunch.

• We use our knife, fork and spoon properly.

• We use quiet voices and listen to each other.

• We use good table manners when we are eating.

• We remember to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’.

• We put our hand up if we need help. 

• We tidy up and clear our plate, cutlery and cup when we have finished.

• We clean the table and sweep up any food we have dropped.

• We leave the hall when we have been given permission to do so by an adult so we can check you have eaten enough food and your area is clean. 

We are encouraging children to eat a healthy amount of their lunch, as some children have not been eating enough. We will be checking to make sure children have eaten enough and your area is clean before you leave the hall. 

Harvest 

We would like to invite you to our Harvest Festival which will take place on Wednesday 16th October at 2.30pm and Thursday 17th October at 9am in the school hall. The children of Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will perform poems and songs to celebrate the importance of Harvest and would like to share this experience with you. Many of the children are particularly keen so we have uploaded the songs onto Google Classroom in the folder ‘Harvest Festival Music’ so that they can practise at home if they wish.

As in previous years, we are collecting for food banks which would be particularly pleased to accept some specific types of food donations to assist them in their excellent work. If you are able to, then a donation, however big or small, would be gratefully received for this reason. Suitable items include: breakfast cereals, coffee, tea, tinned puddings, tinned meats, tinned fruits, tinned vegetables, pasta, biscuits and sugar. Baby food items and baby toiletries are also in short supply. We would be so grateful if you could check that all items have long expiry dates.  Donations may be sent in with the children to their classrooms or dropped off in the school office from Monday 7th October. 

The side hall doors at the front of the building will be opening 15 minutes before the performance begins to give you time to find yourself somewhere to sit. You will not be able to park in the drop off zone for this event.

We need your help! 

I'm delighted to share that, thanks to the incredible efforts of Mr. Steer over the summer break, our school allotment has been repaired and sleepers replaced. This wonderful resource provides a unique opportunity for our children to learn about nature, healthy eating, and sustainability. To ensure the allotment continues to thrive, we're seeking volunteers to help with its upkeep and to assist children during their gardening sessions. If you have any time to spare, even an hour a month, and a passion for gardening, we'd love to hear from you. Please email the school office if you're interested in getting involved. Your support would be greatly appreciated!

Birthdays 

Hurst Park Primary Academy is looking for volunteers to enhance children's learning. Volunteers are highly valued and appreciated by children and staff. In the past, volunteers have helped children with reading and maintaining the Library. Volunteers must complete a comprehensive induction programme, including a DBS check, and adhere to our Safeguarding procedures. Volunteering hours are flexible.  If you are interested in making a difference, please complete the Volunteer Registration form  to apply. Please note that volunteers will not be placed in their child's class.

Year 1 Outdoor Learning 

Year 1 explored Hapazome! The children learned about natural pigments in leaves and flowers, then safely used hammers to create their own beautiful bookmarks 

Year 2 Artists! 

Year 2 have been exploring the amazing work of Paul Klee in their art lessons! They used mixed media to recreate his iconic ‘Cat and Bird’ painting from 1928. Our young artists experimented with pencils, crayons and watercolours.

Year 2 Writers!

Year 3 have been storytelling superstars this week! Inspired by "Greta & the Giants," they crafted their own epic adventures. From planning to publishing, their creativity and descriptive language have blown us away!

Year 5 Geographers!

Year 5, had a fantastic fieldwork adventure! Even though the rain decided to join us for the whole walk, it didn't dampen our spirits. The walk provided an opportunity for us to observe and analyse various leisure activities. Furthermore, we conducted primary research, engaging with members of the public to ascertain their perspectives on our local area. Upon returning to school, the data collected was collated and presented in individual reports, allowing pupils to reflect on their findings.

Year 6 Scientists! 

Our budding Scientists in Year 6 learnt all about the Visible Spectrum. They created their own Colour Wheel and discovered that the colours appear white when spun. 

Sporting fixtures 

Our Sports Crew took park in the annual Sports Leadership training with Shawley Primary and West Ashtead Primary. 

They learned what makes a good leader, explored responsibilities and led games for KS2 children. We look forward to seeing them get started! 

Justplay Music School is looking for new band mates and instrumental recruits for our fun, confidence building music lessons at HurstPark school! One to one Drums, Piano, Guitar, and Bass are all available during the school day as well as our lunchtime clubs, Jamming Together. Take part in our concerts and recording opportunities and discover your child's passion for music. We also have a Rock Band camp in half term!
