Learning Together, Growing Together

Learning

International Primary Curriculum

Wow! What a fantastic start to our IPC curriculum this term! Children throughout the school have been learning all about, well-learning! In Milepost 3 children have taught each other new skills and in Milepost 2 the children taught their adults something new.

We have all become experts on the brain as you can see from the fantastic work the children have completed.

Reading

Reading is such a crucial skill for children to acquire. As well as the mechanics of reading, fostering a love of reading is also crucial as it develops vocabulary and wider knowledge. At Cheam Fields Primary Academy we are always trying to find new ways to raise the profile of reading within school and as such we have planned many exciting reading opportunities and events for this year. Look out in the newsletter for all of our wonderful reading related news.

Battle of the Books

This term we will be relaunching our Battle of the Books reading competition at Cheam Fields. Each year group will have a list of books recommended for their age group. In order to enter the battle, children need to read a book from the list and when they have done this, they need to complete a book review. When their teacher has seen their review, they will record this on their ‘Battle of the Book’ chart which is kept in the classroom. Each term in our Excellent Eight Assembly, we will celebrate the classes and children who have read the most books so far. The children have copies of each book in their classroom for them to borrow. Please encourage your child to return these promptly when they have finished reading them. Each book has a special ‘Battle of the Books’ sticker to help you distinguish them. Every week in the newsletter we will share a book from one of the year groups, giving you a short synopsis. Keep an eye out for these to see if your child has already read it or whether it will be a book they will be keen to read!

As we prepare for our launch this year, please check at home for any books with the ‘Battle of the Books’ sticker which have not yet been returned. Then we’ll be all ready for the battle to begin!

Class Novels in Key Stage 2

The reading and writing sessions in KS2 have begun in full swing, based on some fantastic class novels. These have been carefully selected to showcase great vocabulary and storytelling. Make sure to ask your child about the new books they have started to read!

A Great Year for Sport...

What a year 2017-18 was for PE at Cheam Fields. The MUGA was completed and used for the whole year. We ran the Daily Mile, which you can see on the playground. We entered more competitions than ever before and ran more clubs than in previous years.

The year was successful for both the boys and girl's football teams who did very well in their leagues. Our fantastic Year 6 children won the national Korfball Under 11 championships.

After all the hard work from the PE team we were awarded the Youth School Games Gold mark for the second year in a row which is a fantastic achievement. It is a mark we are extremely proud of and we aspire to continually improve upon. This year we will be continuing to promote a physical and healthy lifestyle in our pupils with more clubs and activities for the children.

Our school Basketball team also won the Sutton Schools Championship and were then selected to represent Sutton at the London Youth Games. All the children involved had a fantastic day and an experience they won't forget.

Looking Smart in our School Uniforms...

Please remember that the children should be coming to school in full school uniform every day. We are encouraging the children to take pride in wearing their uniform and therefore take pride in themselves and the school. Please see our school uniform requirements on the website. If you still need to buy items of school uniform, Schoolwear Inc will be holding a pop-up shop on Monday 24th September in the hall after school.

Opportunity

Year 5 Trip to High Ashurst

What a fantastic time year 5 had at High Ashurst on Tuesday. We were very brave and had a go at climbing the rock wall. At 12 metres high, it was quite daunting but we persevered! We played a number of team games that promoted communication, co-operation, respect and team work. We completed some map work which involved a lot of running around! The instructors were so impressed with how well we worked together and how much we encouraged each other. Well done to year 5!

Music

Reception have had a fantastic first full week in school! We are very proud of how independently they have come in and settled. A highlight of the week for us was our very first music session with Miss Green. We sang a welcome song and began to explore beat and rhythm. Well done to all of our Reception children for a fantastic start at Cheam Fields Primary Academy.

PE Kits

Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school from Monday 17th September ready to take part in all the sporting opportunities at school. Please see our website for the PE Kit list.

Before and After School Clubs

School run clubs will be starting during the week commencing Monday 17th September. Please look out for the confirmation letter and return the permission slip to school before the first day of the club.

We still have a few vacancies in the following clubs:

  • Junior Choir
  • Boys Football, Netball
  • Cross Country
  • Infant Choir
  • Gym
  • Art
  • History

If your child would be interested in attending any of these clubs, please ask at the office.

Raising Money for Sutton Night Watch - Helping the Homeless

Well done to Tom in Garnet class (Year 3). He has completed a sponsored walk and raised £500 in aid of Sutton Night Watch, a charity helping the homeless. The Charity feed the homeless three days a week at the Seacombe Centre and the money Tom has raised will go towards buying more supplies. Well done Tom, this is a lovely thing to do and we are all very proud of you.

Communication

We do our best to keep you informed about what is happening at school through newsletters, Twitter, email and eSchools Parent Communication App. The eSchools app is a great way to keep up to date and keep all the school information in one place. It also allows us to send you text notifications through the app at no cost. The app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. If you don't know your login details, please ask at the office. If you are new to Cheam Fields you will shortly receive a letter home with your account details.

If you have changed your mobile phone number or email address, please notify the office as soon as possible so we can update your information and ensure you don't miss out on important communications.
