On Monday, Cheam Fields fell silent to mark 100 years since the first Remembrance day celebrations in 1919.
It was originally called “Armistice Day” to commemorate the armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 am—on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
We had special assemblies where some of our pupils shared things they had created as well as memories of family members who fought during the world wars.
Nursery & Reception pupils will be doing a sponsored bounce.
They can come to school dressed as nursery rhyme character.
We will be running two Reading Workshops for Year 1 parents on Thursday 21st November at 9am and 6pm in the Resource Area.
It will involve information about how we teach reading in school as well as ways you can support your child at home.
If you are unable to make it, the slides will be sent home and put on the the school website.
As you know, we always like to decorate the school at Christmas time. This year, if you wish, we would like you and your child to make a bell. This can be made in any way you would like, using any materials you choose.
These are going to be hung from strings around the school, so please make sure they are not made of anything too heavy or too big (no glass please).
Please bring your bells into school by Friday 6th December at the latest.
Our current Year 4 classes have their Steve McQueen photographs displayed in the exhibition at the Tate Britain, these will be on display until 3rd May.
Year 4 will be visiting the exhibition on Wednesday 22nd January 2020 as part of our Arts Week (a letter will be coming home soon).
If you want to visit this free exhibition before then, you won't find the location of our photographs on a public map and gallery staff will not hold or share information about where specific photographs are located due to safeguarding reasons.
Our photograph is located in Section 22.
The exhibition spans 24 sections that are marked clockwise from the entrance.
Please note that in some instances the photographs might span across two sections, if they appear at the end of one line, so please look to the next section if you don’t see them banked together.
The gallery have requested that you are mindful of sharing the location of our photos on social media for safeguarding reasons.
We hope you enjoy the exhibition if you decide to go - we can't wait to see our photos as part of the exhibition in January!
In the event of snow or extreme weather over the winter period, please check the school website for updates or changes to the school routine.
We will also update the Open Check website.
-Large pieces of cardboard - most likely television boxes or tables/flat pack furniture etc.
-A cardboard cutout or mannequin (preferably male)
If so, please drop them into the school office for the attention of Mrs Barry or Mrs Ludlow. They are also happy to collect!
Thank you - all will be revealed soon!
We would like to start a board game lunchtime club. If anyone has any unwanted board games we would be most grateful.
Please hand them in to the office or give them to Mrs Townsend.
Thank you, as always, for your support.

"I enjoy learning different songs using the Samba drums." Victoria
“I now enjoy playing the violin because I can play different notes.” Rosie B
“Whilst playing violin it gives joy… the teachers sure put in a lot of effort!” Megan R
“I like playing the violin and the cello because I get to express myself. My favourite piece of music to play is ‘Boogie Base’ which is an active, cheerful song!” Amy C
“I like our lessons because I like the songs we play, some of them go together to make partner songs. The instruments are also really fun to play!” Flynn M
We are getting very excited as we are starting to rehearse Christmas songs for our upcoming Christmas concerts and productions.
Do encourage your children to take every opportunity to learn their lines and lyrics.
Don’t forget to put the Christmas concert/production dates in your diary!
At Cheam Fields, we are working had to continue to create an environment where all children recognise and respect each other's differences.
KS1 & KS2 reflected on the 'Change Starts With Us' theme in assemblies.
Year 2 used Adam the apple to explore the idea that although people may not look sad on the outside, they can be bruised and sad on the inside - especially after people are unkind to them.
They discussed the consequences of bullying and how it makes people feel.
Year 2 also used our Now>Press>Play equipment to listen to a story around friendships and bullying.
They became the characters in the story and discussed empathy - what it would be like to be in that situation and how they could resolve it.
Year 3 made a pledge together by holding hands. They have pledged to always be kind to one another.
This week Sonny came to show us his collage all about where he used to live and where he went to school before he joined Cheam Fields.
Remember to check out the Home Learning page on the website to find details of your optional projects!
Make sure you come and show Miss Shaw and Mrs Townsend.

Amazing Grace - Mary Hoffman
Grace loves to act out stories. Sometimes she plays the leading part, sometimes she is 'a cast of thousands.' When her school decides to perform Peter Pan , Grace is longing to play Peter, but her classmates say that Peter was a boy, and besides, he wasn't black... But Grace's Ma and Nana tell her she can be anything she wants if she puts her mind to it...

Fun fact...
Last week, the School Council met with members of the LEO Catering Team to discuss their continued commitment to healthy eating. They created a plan to help promote healthy eating further.
They have created posters, to remind children which foods they agreed to give up (chocolate bars and cakes including cake bars and donuts). These are going to be displayed in the hall.

INGREDIENTS
150g dark chocolate, chopped
150g milk chocolate, chopped
150ml double cream
50g unsalted butter
cocoa powder, sprinkles, lustre powder, icing sugar, chopped nuts, for coating
flavourless oil (such as sunflower), for shaping
METHOD
Put the dark and milk chocolate in a bowl, then put the cream and butter in a pan and bring to a simmer. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and stir until it melts. Leave to cool, then chill in the fridge for 7 hrs.
Put the coatings into separate bowls. To shape the truffles, lightly rub your hands with flavourless oil and roll teaspoons of the truffle mix between your palms – this can get messy!
Gently roll the truffles in the bowl until evenly coated, then put in a box and chill. Store in the fridge in an airtight container for three days, or freeze for up to a month. Defrost in the fridge overnight.
