Year 4 Parent Workshop - 1:1 Chromebook Project Launch

Tuesday 15th October at 9am in the Community Room

After half term, we will be launching a 1:1 Chromebook programme for all Year 4 pupils.

As part of this pilot, across all LEO Schools, each child will be provided with a personal Chromebook, case and digital pencil. We will be integrating them in teaching at school and they will also be using them at home.

The workshop will explain how the programme will run, expectations of children and to offer you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

If you are unable to attend, the slides will be available on the school website.

Posters will be displayed around school and a winner from each year group will be chosen by our very own Midday Supervisors on Thursday 31st October.

Winners will receive a prize and their poster will be added to the Weekly Newsletter.

Reception Autumn Walk and Open Afternoon

On Monday, Reception went on an autumn walk to Nonsuch Park. They collected conkers, pine cones, leaves and sticks. They got very muddy!

Later that afternoon, they used all of these things to make art work inspired by Andy Goldsworthy with their grown ups.

Well done for being so sensible on your walk. We are very proud of you!

Year 4 Chromebook Trip

As part of the LEO Academy Trust Technology for Learning programme, Jack W (Emerald) Lois (Emerald) and Ruby (Topaz) visited the XMA office in St Albans on Tuesday 8th October.

They had a factory tour, watched the Chromebooks which will be delivered to school soon being unpacked and interviewed Product Managers from Viglen.

Geography - why is it so important?

Do you know the continents and oceans?

Having this fundamental knowledge allows children to explore and understand the world, providing a stage for current or historical events that have, or are taking place. It enables them to become global citizens who understand how we are connected through location, movement, climate, religion, trade and much much more.

Could you use imagery to name and locate the continents?

Which continent looks like a horse drinking water?

Which continent looks like a PlayStation controller?

Which continent looks like someone proudly holding their head high?

Can you think of any more?

How you can help at home?

Look at a globe or a map and discuss different places you have visited or events taking place around the world.

Check out the CBBC Geography quizzes. Let us know how you get on!

Choose a natural feature of the world (mountains, rivers, forests, beaches) and research where some important examples are found. What is special or impressive about them? Can you produce a guide? Can you use one as a setting for a short story or poem? Be sure to bring in your work!

Will they be in time to thwart Cruella’s evil scheme, or have they bitten off more than they can chew?

Police Visit

This week Year 3 and 4 had a talk from the Metropolitan Police. They spoke to them about the importance of not talking to strangers - in person and on the internet when playing video games.

They reminded them how to keep ourselves safe inside and outside of school.

They loved trying on their police jackets which weigh over a stone and they got to have a play with their radios.

LEO Badminton Competition

Year 5 and 6 enjoyed hosting and taking part in the LEO Inter-School Badminton Competition this week.

It was a competitive yet fun tournament where they developed their perseverance and resilience.

It was a great opportunity for many of the children to try a new competitive sport for the fist time!

Thanks to Mr Woollard, Mrs Barry and Miss Bartlett for organising it!

World Mental Health Day

Thursday 10th October 2019

What is Mental Health?

Your mental health affects how you feel, think and act. It refers to your emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. Your mental health can change and fluctuate on a daily basis and over time, and can be affected by a range of factors.

Just as it’s important to look after your physical health, the same is true for your mental health. Your state of wellbeing affects how you cope with stress, relate to others, make choices, and play a part in your family, community, workplace and among your friends.

Good mental health among children

When children have good levels of wellbeing it helps them to:

learn and explore the world

feel, express and manage positive and negative emotions

form and maintain good relationships with others

cope with, and manage, change, setbacks and uncertainty

develop and thrive.

When children look after their mental health and develop their coping skills it can help them to boost their resilience, self-esteem and confidence. It can also help them learn to settle themselves, feel calm, and engage positively with their education - which can, in turn, improve their academic attainment.

The facts about mental health and children

One in 10 primary school children aged five to 10 has an identifiable mental health condition – that’s around three children in every class! Among this age group, boys are twice as likely as girls to have a mental health problem.

The move to secondary school sees an increase in the number of children struggling, with one in seven children aged 11 to 16 having an identifiable mental health condition. However, during these teen years, boys and girls are equally likely to be affected.

While more than half of all mental health problems are established by the age of 14, the factors that can put a child more at risk of developing a mental health problem can often be identified much earlier. If a child who is at risk isn’t given early support, they may go on to develop a mental health problem.

Early intervention is key to giving young people the best start in life.

Please see below for some activities and tips to help you (and your children) be happier, more in control and able to cope better with life’s ups and downs.
