Ofsted Short Inspection Outcome

We are delighted to share with you the outcome from our Ofsted Inspection on 30th January 2019 and are very proud that Cheam Fields Primary continues to be a good school.

The inspection was a short inspection which means that one inspector visited our school for the day. During this time she went on learning walks, looked at children’s books, spoke to children and met with various school leaders.

She found many strengths in the school which are detailed below :

  • Safeguarding is effective which means your children feel safe and know how to get help if they need it.
  • Pupils are courteous towards each other, achieve highly and demonstrate positive attitudes and enthusiasm for learning.
  • The teaching and learning of mathematics is strong.

Ofsted have highlighted the next steps for us in our journey towards outstanding is to ensure that :

  • Teachers’ expectations in writing are consistently high in all subjects.
  • Lower ability pupils are helped further to develop fluency so we will be focusing on pencil grips and cursive handwriting skills.
  • The proportion of boys who are working above the national standards is increased by developing their independence.

Our School Development Plan addresses writing as an area for improvement, especially boys and lower ability pupils. We are now reviewing all areas of the curriculum, to ensure that boys are given ample opportunity to become more independent in their learning .

World Book Day

One of our favourite days of the year took place this week - World Book Day. This year we looked at the text Tom's Magnificent Machines which was all about a little boy and his dad who love to invent new and crazy things. Before half term, the children were set an inventing challenge of their own. We had lots of fantastic entries to our 'Magnificent Machines' competition, and the winner from each milepost were:

  • EYFS: Rosie Legg for her 'Helpful Robot'
  • Milepost 1: Sam Skerry for his 'Squirrel-a-tron'
  • Milepost 2: Fynn O'Neill for his 'Perfect pancake maker'
  • Milepost 3: Emilie Kent for her 'Flight bag'

Well done to every one who entered and we look forward to displaying lots of the creations in school.

World Book Day kicked off with our annual teachers book quiz. This year our two teams were helpfully assisted by two Year 6 students who were fantastic as well as the audience who were called upon many times. After a close bonus round, the winners were 'Dream Team' with a 44 to 41 1/2 point victory.

Throughout the rest of the day, the children enjoyed many different activities including the mystery story teller where teachers read to different classes and shared reading between different year groups.

All the excitement was rounded off by our final book fair. We would like to thank everyone who attended and purchased something as the money raised goes towards bringing new and exciting books into the school.

Well done on all your fantastic costumes and we're already looking forward to planning new and exciting things for next year!

Year 3 Visit the London Transport Museum

On Friday 1st March Year 3 went on a fantastic trip to the London Transport Museum. They explored transport over time and even became Victorians! They found out how transport has improved the lives of people who use it and how it is continuing to develop. Thank you so much for all the help received from the parent and grandparent helpers.

Year 5 Visit the Mosque

As part of their IPC topic, ‘Early Islamic Civilisations’, Year 5 had the exciting opportunity to visit the Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden. The children were welcomed with drinks and snacks to refresh their minds and were then taken on a tour of the Mosque. They visited the Prayer room and learnt all about the Five Pillars of Islam. The children experienced a sound proof room and were invited to scream as loud as they could (which they definitely did)! They were taught all about Ramadan and the different times of day for Prayer. It was a very enjoyable experience!

Early Years Visit from Fiona Farm

This week Fiona Farm visited the children in Nursery and Reception. Fiona brought along with her two goats, a sheep, a pig, two guinea pigs, two chickens, and a rabbit. The children were very careful when holding, stroking and brushing the animals and took great care. They all thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

Rabbit Class Visit Pizza Express

On Wednesday 27th February Rabbit class visited Pizza Express in Cheam Village to see how food is prepared. They followed the process of making the “Queen of Pizzas” (Margherita) and tasted various toppings. Some great facts were learnt too. Did you know they can cook 27 pizzas at the same time! And they only take 5 minutes to cook! What a tasty trip!

Why not ask your child how they used our

Word of the Week?

Year 1 & 2: magnificent

Years 3 & 4: crimson

Years 5 & 6: conundrum

Each week we put a brief synopsis of one of our Battle of the Books in the newsletter from a year group’s book list.

This week’s book is 'Sophie and the Albine Camelby Stephen Davis and is from the Year 4 book list.

Sophie lives in Gorom-Gorom with her carnivorous-plant obsessed dad. Despite living there for two years and speaking the local language, Sophie finds it difficult to make friends. So when she meets Gidaado, a young griot (story-teller) she agrees to join him and his albino camel, Chobbal, on a journey to his village. It is not until they have set off that Sophie begins to realise just how dangerous the desert is - it's full of djinns that creep up behind you and jump on your head and make you go mad, not to mention the infamous Moussa ag Litni, a ruthless bandit who steals camels...

The children need to remember to fill in a book review once they have read a book!
