School Updates

Staffing for September: Goodbyes and welcome backs!

We are very pleased that our teaching staff is extremely stable for next year. We are delighted to welcome Mrs Judge and Miss Harland back from Maternity Leave as well as welcoming Mr Hollaway to the Cheam Common teaching team on a permanent basis.

As you all know, Mr Greaves joined us at Easter as our Sports' Coach. We are pleased that our Sports’ team is expanding and that he will be joined by Mr Honeysett, Miss Mills and Miss Eldridge this academic year.

However, as always at this time of year, we say farewell to some of our current team. Miss Fox will be leaving us after two years to go travelling. We wish her all the best on her adventures: her enthusiasm, passion and care will be greatly missed at Cheam Common. We also say farewell to Mrs Kamali who we welcomed back this term from maternity leave. Mrs Kamali is going to spend some time with her daughter. Mrs Kamali has been an asset to Cheam Common, always going above and beyond and her caring and kind nature will be missed.

Summer Fair

Saturday 15th July      11am - 2pm

We are excited to welcome you to our Summer Fair tomorrow morning.

Please see the programme and map attached for the Summer Fair. There is some useful information inside so please read and familiarise yourself with where the stalls are located on the day.  There are plenty of games to play, a variety of refreshments stalls and lots of prizes to be won!

Queuing system on the day - we will be implementing a two-queue system on the day

Entry into the Summer Fair is 50p or 1 token for adults through the main gate of the Infants' playground

If you don't have tokens and need to pay by cash or card you will queue up the road towards the Infants' office.

If you have tokens, you will queue down towards the Juniors' Office. You can use 1 token as adult entrance into the Fair.

Please make sure you are in the correct queue in order to avoid queuing for longer than you need to.

Pizza Federicci

We will have an external pizza stall on the day they are only able to make GLUTEN FREE pizza between 11:00-11:30 so to avoid any disappointment please arrive early and order.

Volunteers

A big shout out has to go to all the volunteers who have committed to giving us some of their time on the day; without your support this event would not have been possible. We will be sending out information later on in the week with a timetable and extra information you might need for the day.

We can't wait to see you there!

Purley Sports Club Voucher: Raffle

Purley Sports Club have kindly offered the school a free half day or full day holiday camp voucher to be used at any of their school holiday camps in 2023. We would like to make sure the voucher goes to someone who would like to make the most of the opportunity and have every intention of using the voucher. Therefore, we will raffle the voucher between all respondents of this form. The raffle will take place at our annual Sports Personality of the Year Awards ceremony on Thursday 20th July 2023, so please complete the Google Form by Wednesday 20th July at midnight if you would like the chance to win.

Our Book Wishlist!

Children across the school wrote a wishlist of the different books that they would like to see in their library and their classrooms.

We have collated this wishes and have put together an Amazon Wish List, which can be found here. If parents and families wish, there are over a hundred books that children are desperate to read on the list and these can be ordered as a present to our school. Alternatively, if you notice a book on the list that your children no longer read, we are always grateful for any donations!

It has also been suggested by our children that, on a birthday, rather than bringing sweets in for their classmates, children choose a book on the list that they would like to donate to their class. This also falls in line with our commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles. On the order, there is an option to leave a message - you can specify which class the book is for. As ever, we recognise that money can be tight so please note that this is entirely optional. Any support is always appreciated.

Weekly School and Sporting News Stories

Greek Mythology Club

We are incredibly proud of members of Year 5, who have taken it upon themselves to plan, organise and deliver a brand-new Greek Mythology Club. They were so inspired by their new topic that they garnered interest and created activities themselves. We are so proud of their enthusiasm, creativity and drive to deliver this club to their students.

A massive thank you to Jemimah and James for founding the club, and to Nate, Evan, Tanu, Grace and Archisha for helping write letters to organise the club. We are hoping that this lunchtime club will run into the Autumn Term - watch this space!

It was another busy week of events at Cheam Common!

🏫 Year 2 Information Evening: On Monday evening, we held our Year 2 Information Evening, in which Miss Austin delivered a presentation all about Year 3. Some of our brilliant Year 6 helpers came back to give parents and children tours of the school, our LEO Catering team served food for parents to sample and parents had a chance to speak to our new Year 3 teachers.

🪘 Year 3 Drumming Performances: On Tuesday afternoon, our parents were treated to drumming performances by our Year 3 classes. They had been practising hard all year with our drumming teacher, Kostas, and we were so impressed by their performances. Well done, Year 3!

🎾 Wimbledon Trip: On Wednesday, eight of our Year 5 children were lucky enough to be chosen to attend the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. Along with other LEO schools, Cheam Common entered the schools ballot and were lucky enough to obtain Court 1 tickets! The children enjoyed some of the activities that were on offer (such as Where's Andy?), watch a Wheelchair Women's Singles match, had lunch on The Hill, and then watched two quarter finals on Court 1.

📖 ⚽ Sutton United Literacy Activity Day: On Thursday, our Year 4 Boys' and Girls' Football Teams travelled to Sutton United to take part in a day organised by the Sutton United Foundation and LEO Academy Trust. Children were able to meet Dan Freedman, author of the Jamie Johnson book series. They also completed some writing and footballing activities.

🐅 Year 6 Summer Production: The Jungle Book: Throughout the week, our Year 6 children put on performances of their summer production: The Jungle Book. Our two casts had practised for weeks, our Art Team had done an incredible job at creating various props, and all children had learnt a number of fun songs. Well done, Year 6!

🤸‍♀️ GymKids Performance: On Friday morning, our GymKids club were able to showcase all of the skills that they have been learning in their morning clubs this year. We invited parents and the rest of the school to two separate performances and we were so impressed with everything that they were able to showcase.

Individual achievements

If you would like to celebrate your child's individual achievements outside of school, we'd love to hear from you! Thank you to those of you who have already shared sporting achievements using the Google Form that we sent out earlier this week - we will be sharing these in Sports Personality of the Year assembly on Thursday.

Scarlett

Scarlett (3A) has had a busy few weeks. Not only has she advanced into the 'Intermediate' group at her local gymnastics group, but she has also taken part in her local drama group's performance of 'Wicked'. We are so proud that she has been following her passions and interests outside of school.

Aleeza

We are so proud of Aleeza (4F) who passed her Piano Grade 1 exam with a Distinction! We enjoyed listening to Aleeza's performance in Celebration Assembly this morning. Well done, Aleeza! You can watch her performance here.

Summer Holiday Activities

Young Carers at Cheam Common

At Cheam Common Junior Academy, we hold a weekly small group session to support children across the school who fulfil the role of ‘Young Carer’ because they have a sibling or parent with serious health issues, special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).

We want to celebrate the important role our Young Carers play, but also recognise that they may face challenges and pressures not shared by the general school population.

The group meets during assembly time and is led by Mrs Hart.

If you would like your child to take part please complete this form.

If you have any questions about the group, please feel free to contact us at ccjsend@leoacademytrust.co.uk

Please click here for more information on how parents can be supported with the behaviour and understanding of their children. The courses that are available are as follows:

Please click here to access the Local Authority's Ambitious for SEND parent newsletter to stay in touch with what is happening in the local area.  To receive these newsletters (three produced each year) please subscribe to the local area Ambitious for SEND newsletter.  It is a great way to stay in touch with what is happening in the local area.  You can unsubscribe at any time.

‘Small Change, Big Difference’ Parent Group for parents of children with a diagnosis of autism.'

We are also looking to host another Small Change, Big Difference course with Adapt to Learn. For those that are unfamiliar with this course, we run this as an alternative to the Early Bird programme. Some information about this is below. If you are interested in attending this course, please email: sutton@nas.org.uk and we'll be in touch.

The aim is to empower parents, supporting them to help their children by developing an in-depth understanding of autism.  Taking a positive approach, we will explore, share and discuss practical strategies to help develop communication skills, pre-empt and manage behaviour and gain confidence and resilience.

During the sessions, parents will be given the opportunity to make connections, gain support and feel less isolated.

Each course comprises of four x 1.5-hour sessions and will cover a range of topics.
