Cheam Common Junior Academy: Kingsmead Avenue, Worcester Park, KT4 8UT
Email: ccjoffice@leoacademytrust.co.uk http://www.cheamcommon.org.uk/
Before Christmas, we ran a competition for children to re-design our Year 6 outdoor area. Finally, we are pleased to announce that we have 5 winners:
Skyler (5G), Gryff (3F), Remi (5H), Aadhya (5G) and Sofie (6W)
We would like to combine aspects from all five designs for our garden area. You can see these designs below. We loved these designs because they all incorporated wildflowers, areas for children to relax in, bee and bug-friendly items, as well as being beautifully designed and thoroughly thought through.
We are also pleased to announce that Veolia has given us a £200 grant to help with this project, as well as donating several kilograms of compost.
On Friday 5th May, we will be collecting any secondhand donations for our garden project. This could include:
Old plant pots
Compost
Old gardening tools
Any seeds or bulbs
Bird feeders or bird baths
Old wooden palettes
Bamboo sticks
Garden waste bags
Gardening gloves
Logs, pine cones or firewood (for bug hotel!)
If you have anything that you would like to donate, we would be incredibly grateful. These can be brought to a table that will be on the gate, or brought straight to the office.
On Wednesday 10th May (weather dependent!), we would love some help to complete the first phase of this garden project which will be to turn over the soil and add the new compost to the garden area. We have identified some plants that we will keep and some that will need weeding. Parents and children are invited - please bring your own tools if possible! Refreshments will be available. We anticipate that we will need volunteers between 3:30-4:30pm so this hopefully shouldn't take up too much of your time. If you would be interested in volunteering, please complete this Google Form; please note that this form will close after 15 responses as we believe that will be plenty!
More information coming soon!
Coronation Memorabilia
To celebrate the King’s Coronation we would like to provide all children with a special token gift from the school to remember this special date in History. Any donations towards this cost would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to give a donation, this can be handed in on the gate on the morning of Friday 5th May.
Our Eco Council has been busy helping to design a choice board of Earth Day activities, which was celebrated on Saturday 23rd April.
If your child has time this weekend, they might like to look through some of the activities on this choice board. We'd love for your children to get involved.
One of the activities is a Community Clean Up. Our Year 5 children, along with our Active Citizens, have been taking part in litter picking around school recently and have been astounded by the difference that they have made. We'd love to see any photos of you and your family doing a small litter pick in your local area this weekend. Either tweet or email this to us.

SEND & Inclusion Updates!
Young Carers at Cheam Common
At Cheam Common Junior Academy, we hold a weekly small group session to support children across the school who fulfil the role of ‘Young Carer’ because they have a sibling or parent with serious health issues, special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).
We want to celebrate the important role our Young Carers play, but also recognise that they may face challenges and pressures not shared by the general school population.
The group meets during assembly time and is led by Mrs Hart.
If you would like your child to take part please complete this form.
If you have any questions about the group, please feel free to contact us at ccjsend@leoacademytrust.co.uk

‘Small Change, Big Difference’ Parent Group for parents of children with a diagnosis of autism.'
We are also looking to host another Small Change, Big Difference course with Adapt to Learn. For those that are unfamiliar with this course, we run this as an alternative to the Early Bird programme. Some information about this is below. If you are interested in attending this course, please email: sutton@nas.org.uk and we'll be in touch.
The aim is to empower parents, supporting them to help their children by developing an in-depth understanding of autism. Taking a positive approach, we will explore, share and discuss practical strategies to help develop communication skills, pre-empt and manage behaviour and gain confidence and resilience.
During the sessions, parents will be given the opportunity to make connections, gain support and feel less isolated.
Each course comprises of four x 1.5-hour sessions and will cover a range of topics.
