Cheam Common Junior Academy: Kingsmead Avenue, Worcester Park, KT4 8UT
Email: ccjoffice@leoacademytrust.co.uk http://www.cheamcommon.org.uk/
We are very pleased that our teaching staff is extremely stable for next year. We are delighted to welcome Mrs Judge and Miss Harland back from Maternity Leave as well as welcoming Mr Hollaway to the Cheam Common teaching team on a permanent basis.
As you all know, Mr Greaves joined us at Easter as our Sports' Coach. We are pleased that our Sports’ team is expanding and that he will be joined by Mr Honeysett, Miss Mills and Miss Eldridge this academic year.
However, as always at this time of year, we say farewell to some of our current team. Miss Fox will be leaving us after two years to go travelling. We wish her all the best on her adventures: her enthusiasm, passion and care will be greatly missed at Cheam Common. We also say farewell to Mrs Kamali who we welcomed back this term from maternity leave. Mrs Kamali is going to spend some time with her daughter. Mrs Kamali has been an asset to Cheam Common, always going above and beyond and her caring and kind nature will be missed.
If your child would be interested in joining our Rocksteady bands from September, please see the attached flyer for more information.
These classes take place during school time and are based at Cheam Common Junior Academy.
Please find attached information about applying for high schools for September 2024. This document also includes open evening dates.
These dates are provisional and might change. Check each school’s website for more information. Open evenings let you see more about the school before you apply. You'll be able to see the school buildings and facilities and meet the staff. The head teachers of each school will tell you about the school's achievements and plans for the future.
You can find the dates of open evenings for schools outside Sutton on the school's website.

Children across the school wrote a wishlist of the different books that they would like to see in their library and their classrooms.
We have collated this wishes and have put together an Amazon Wish List, which can be found here. If parents and families wish, there are over a hundred books that children are desperate to read on the list and these can be ordered as a present to our school. Alternatively, if you notice a book on the list that your children no longer read, we are always grateful for any donations!
It has also been suggested by our children that, on a birthday, rather than bringing sweets in for their classmates, children choose a book on the list that they would like to donate to their class. This also falls in line with our commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles. On the order, there is an option to leave a message - you can specify which class the book is for. As ever, we recognise that money can be tight so please note that this is entirely optional. Any support is always appreciated.
We are incredibly proud of members of Year 5, who have taken it upon themselves to plan, organise and deliver a brand-new Greek Mythology Club. They were so inspired by their new topic that they garnered interest and created activities themselves. We are so proud of their enthusiasm, creativity and drive to deliver this club to their students.
A massive thank you to Jemimah and James for founding the club, and to Nate, Evan, Tanu, Grace and Archisha for helping write letters to organise the club. We are hoping that this lunchtime club will run into the Autumn Term - watch this space!
🎸 Rocksteady Concert: On Monday morning, our rockstars who have been taking part in Rocksteady all year were able to perform to both their parents and to the rest of the school.
👟 Year 3 & 4 Sports Day: On Monday afternoon, we were finally able to celebrate our postponed Year 3/4 Sports Day! Children enjoyed rotating around various activity stations competing in their houses. They were also treated to much-needed refreshments served to them by the Friends of Cheam Common. Finally, they enjoyed sprinting races against one another, and even got to watch the ever-eventful Parent and Teacher Races! Thank you to all involved.
⚽ Staff vs. Y6 Pupils Matches: On Tuesday afternoon, our Y6 football and netball teams took on the staff in various matches. All matches were incredibly tight with some dubious rule-following from both sides!
🎖 Merit Assembly: On Wednesday morning, we celebrated our termly Merit Assembly. Two children per class received Merit Certificates and four Year 6 pupils received Headteacher's Perseverance Award. Certificates and prizes were handed out for Maths, Art, Handwriting, Writing and Reading, and we were also able to announce the year group winners of Sports Day.
🏆 Sports Personality of the Year Awards: On Thursday morning, we held our annual Sports Personality of the Year Award Ceremony. Twelve Year 6 pupils were nominated for the award and we are delighted to announce that Megan (6W) was the overall winner! We also announced winners of awards such as Year Group Winners, Unsung Hero, Most Improved, Most Committed Trainer, and many more!
🪩 Year 6 Leavers' Celebrations: On Thursday evening, we enjoyed our Year 6 Leavers' Celebrations. Children enjoyed playing on various inflatables, had a delicious pizza for dinner and had fun at the disco afterwards. They also had an opportunity to take photos with their friends in our interactive photo booth. It was a wonderful evening and we are so proud of the journey that our Year 6s have been on.
Check out Priyaan's incredible guitar performance here.
Lily and Juno performed onstage in Leatherhead last week with their drama group: StarStruck! Well done, girls!
A massive thank you to Remi and his family for donating brand-new books from our wishlist to his class. Good luck at your new school, Remi!
Earlier this term, you may have seen an email asking parents to send in any sporting achievements that their children may have accomplished outside of school. This was to show in our Sports Personality of the Year Assembly that we held on Thursday. We were overwhelmed by the number of entrants that we had and have created a slideshow of over 70 children's incredible accomplishments.
They can all be viewed here. Thank you to every parent who sent in a nomination of their child's wonderful achievements.

Young Carers at Cheam Common
At Cheam Common Junior Academy, we hold a weekly small group session to support children across the school who fulfil the role of ‘Young Carer’ because they have a sibling or parent with serious health issues, special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).
We want to celebrate the important role our Young Carers play, but also recognise that they may face challenges and pressures not shared by the general school population.
The group meets during assembly time and is led by Mrs Hart.
If you would like your child to take part please complete this form.
If you have any questions about the group, please feel free to contact us at ccjsend@leoacademytrust.co.uk

‘Small Change, Big Difference’ Parent Group for parents of children with a diagnosis of autism.'
We are also looking to host another Small Change, Big Difference course with Adapt to Learn. For those that are unfamiliar with this course, we run this as an alternative to the Early Bird programme. Some information about this is below. If you are interested in attending this course, please email: sutton@nas.org.uk and we'll be in touch.
The aim is to empower parents, supporting them to help their children by developing an in-depth understanding of autism. Taking a positive approach, we will explore, share and discuss practical strategies to help develop communication skills, pre-empt and manage behaviour and gain confidence and resilience.
During the sessions, parents will be given the opportunity to make connections, gain support and feel less isolated.
Each course comprises of four x 1.5-hour sessions and will cover a range of topics.
On Monday 24th July, we will be launching #CEOPSummerChallenge, six weeks of thematic challenges for parents and carers to complete with their children.
The challenge aims to support parents and carers to talk regularly with their children about being online and how to be safer. Each week, parents and carers can choose one challenge (or more if they wish!), from four options per age group, for ages 4 to 11 and 11+. Topics covered in the challenge will be:
Week 1: online security
Week 2: a balanced view of being online
Week 3: sharing photos online
Week 4: socialising online
Week 5: online videos
Week 6: online gaming
Parents and carers can follow the challenge on our Facebook (Click CEOP), where they can look out for posts every Monday. The challenge will also be shared with our professional network on Twitter (@CEOPUK), where you can share with your parent and carer networks.
Keeping Safe Online

Mental Health and Wellbeing Update
The Anna Freud Centre has released a Self Care Plan, aimed at primary-aged students. This plan is a useful toolkit for ensuring that students look after their mental health over the summer holidays, which can be a stressful time for children. Please feel free to share this with your children.
