School Updates

Red Nose Day - Friday 15th March

This year Red Nose Day is on Friday 15th March and, as usual, the School Council would like to raise some money for this great cause as well as the

children having lots of fun!

Firstly, we will be selling red noses in school for £2.00 (the price set by the charity) from Monday 11th March. Our School Council members will be

going round to each class from Monday and the children will be able to buy them using cash. We are asking that the children take the red noses

home, these are not to be worn in school until Friday 15th March. If children buy red noses from Sainsbury's, these also need to stay at home until Friday 15th March.

Secondly, on Friday 15th March the children will be able to come into school in mufti wearing anything red and if they want, a red nose. Also, as this year’s theme is ‘Do Something Funny For Money’, we are also asking all children to come to school with ‘Crazy Hair’. We are asking for a donation of £1 which will be collected at the gate as the children come into school.

Big Walk and Wheel Fortnight

We have some exciting news for you! We are taking part in the 15th year celebration of Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel, the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking, wheeling and scooting challenge. The challenge runs from 11-22 March 2024. It’s free to take part and we would love everyone to be involved.

What do you need to do?

Encourage your child(ren) to walk, use a wheelchair, scoot or cycle to school on as many days as possible during the event.

Including everyone

We want to make sure that everyone can get involved in Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel. We know it may be more difficult for some pupils to take part than others. If you want to discuss more about your child(ren)’s specific needs, please contact Miss Shallcross and we will make sure to look into how your child(ren) can take part.

Why we are taking part

Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel is a great way to build physical activity in children’s daily routine which is important for their physical health and mental wellbeing.

Active school runs also help to reduce congestion and air pollution outside the school gate. A 2021 YouGov study showed nearly half of UK children worry about air pollution near their school. And that children thought active travel was the best way to bring down these pollution levels.

Plus there are some great prizes to be won every day if we get enough children taking part! For more information about the event go to www.bigwalkandwheel.org.uk . Enjoy the challenge!

Our Book Wishlist

Children across the school wrote a wishlist of the different books that they would like to see in their library and their classrooms.

We have collated this wishes and have put together an Amazon Wish List, which can be found here. If parents and families wish, there are over a hundred books that children are desperate to read on the list and these can be ordered as a present to our school. Alternatively, if you notice a book on the list that your children no longer read, we are always grateful for any donations!

It has also been suggested by our children that, on a birthday, rather than bringing sweets in for their classmates, children choose a book on the list that they would like to donate to their class. This also falls in line with our commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles. On the order, there is an option to leave a message - you can specify which class the book is for. As ever, we recognise that money can be tight so please note that this is entirely optional. Any support is always appreciated.

Weekly School and Sporting News Stories

This week at Cheam Common:

🪴 Kew Gardens: On Tuesday, our Year 4 children visited Kew Gardens. They took part in a workshop that looked at where different materials come from, toured the gardens and even got to go inside the Glasshouse.

⛳ Primary Golf Tournament: On Monday, some of our Year 3 and 4 children attended the Sutton Sports Primary Golf Tournament - we finished fourth!

🏉 Tag Rugby Tournament: On Tuesday, we attended the borough tag rugby tournament. Against tough opposition, we worked well as a team and finished fourth - well done, team!

🏐 Netball League Match: On Wednesday afternoon, we travelled to All Saints Benhilton for our next netball league match. We knew this would be a tough match as we had recently qualified for the more advanced league. Both games were incredibly tight but we ended up victorious! Our A Team won 2-0 and our B Team won 4-0. We are so impressed with the progress our netball teams are making.

🏃🏽‍♀️ Primary Fitness Games: On Wednesday afternoon, ten girls represented Cheam Common at the Primary Fitness Games. Although it was an incredibly tiring event, all girls had fun and learned about new events. We even ended up finishing in 4th place!

🚄 MAT Partnership Network Trip: On Wednesday, Avi and Fin (Year 5) travelled to Manchester with Miss Govier to deilver a talk at the MAT Partnerhsip Network. They spoke confidently in front of a packed audience about how their Chromebooks help them to learn.

Fulham Foundation: On Thursday, we were one of eight local schools to be chosen to visit Fulham FC's training ground to take part in a World Book Day event taking part in a training session, meeting members of staff who work at Fulham, and taking part in a discussion with Emma Juhasz, author of 'Jobs in Football'.

🎳 Volunteering at KS1 Panathlon: On Thursday morning, twelve Year 4 children volunteered to help out at the Key Stage 1 Panathlon, that was being hosted in our hall. Children helped to explain each events to the younger children and feedback about them was wonderful. What exceptional role models!

🏑 Year 5/6 Hockey Tournament: On Thursday afternoon, we attended a Year 5/6 Quicksticks Tournament. Our two teams finished 1st and 7th - what an impressive effort at the year's first hockey tournament.

IWD Football Tournament: On Friday, we hosted our very own Girls' Football Tournament at lunchtime to celebrate International Women's Day. We support the FA's #LetGirlsPlay campaign and wanted to help contribute the 'Biggest Ever Football Session'.

If you would like to share your child's achievements outside of school with us, we'd love to hear them! Please complete this short form to tell us all about it!

Sana (Year 3)

Sana decided to dress up as Frida Kahlo for World Book Day and created this incredible video to tell us all about her!

Young Carers at Cheam Common

At Cheam Common Junior Academy, we hold a weekly small group session to support children across the school who fulfil the role of ‘Young Carer’ because they have a sibling or parent with serious health issues, special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).

We want to celebrate the important role our Young Carers play, but also recognise that they may face challenges and pressures not shared by the general school population.

The group meets during assembly time and is led by Mrs Hart.

If you would like your child to take part please complete this form.

If you have any questions about the group, please feel free to contact us at ccjsend@leoacademytrust.co.uk
